Wairarapa Daily Times. [ESTABLISHED 1878.] THURSDAY, APRIL 26, 1894. THE PREMIER AND THE UNEMPLOYED.
SECOND EDITION
The Premier has speken out plainly to the unemployed at Wellington, and those who bear in mind what'he has said need not be misled by false hopes, Practically his position is thai the State can only find work for a email percentage of those who are out of employ. For overy ten men out of a job, it ia probable that only one will be assisted by the' Government. The moat necessitous will be singled out for employment, and this means married men who have been out of work for ths longest time, and who have a cWui to be considered New Zealanders. At the same time Mr Seddon indicated that the Government made a point of employing mm whom contractors would not engage. From this we get the type of the person who has now a reasonable expectation of Government woik, viz, an " unable " bodiod man, who resides in Wellington and Christchurob, who is married, aud who has been a considerable time out of employment. These will be considered by many persons. throughout the country as'! hard terms" from a working man's Government, but they ate certainly honest terms, and it is as well tbaj tbp unemployed throughout New Zealand should understand them clearly. The Labor Bureau no longer answets the anticipations of those who look to it for aid, and alter the recent utterance), o! the Premier the Bureau is practically absolved from all responsibility excepting the necessitous cases which have been defined. The true solution of the unemployed difficulty is of course to encourage the private employment of labour and the investment of private capital in wages. This might be done at once if the Government would give an assurance that they would abstain- from further interference between capital and labour. Tbp position the Government occupies is that it destroys the natural labour market, and takes little or no responsibility for the men who are thereby thrpwn out of employment. It iaa '* red letter day" for Masterton whenit is decided to erect the first creamery in the Mastenon suburbs, the first creamery which will pave the way, we trust, for several others- We would like to see a centre like this surrounded by oreameries! Mr William Udy, director, and Mr Roberts, the Secretary of the New Zealand Dairy Farmers' JJnion, made a favourable impression at jho meeting held on the Fernridge last evening by talking to the settlers in a btraightforward and businesslike manner. The settlers are quite right in casting in tbeir lot with a big strong company instead of attempting a small local one. The day for small companies in dairy enterprise has parsed in this Colony, and if a large Union does not aucoeod, there will be a poor prospect for the industry. We are hopeful for the Unionivseeing that it is being worked by practical men. We have known Mr William Udy, who was present last evening, for a generation, and will) men of bis stamp at the helm, we recognise thit there is «. reasonable prospect of success for tbe Dfiir enterprise. At a dull time like this il is gratifying to discover any sign of progress, and the farmers of Fernridge may be congratulated on [akin'g a step which must benefit both themselves and the town and district generally..
