Wairarapa Daily Times. [ESTABLISHED 1878.] TUESDAY, APRIL 24, 1894. THE JOURNAL OF THE DEPARTMENT OF LABOUR.
The Joutnal.of the Department of Labour is a State publication, which is printed by authority. The Gov eminent must bo held responsible for its contents, and some oi tbem are of such a nature that, only a crauky Minister could explain or defend tbem, The following extract ia an example of the teaching, which the taxpayers of the colony lmve to pay for
In an article 011 •' New Zealaud under the Female Franchise "which appeared in the NmkenihCcntimjmgmm o( February, there appears, among many other misleading remarks, this sentence:" We must trust to beer and the hanks to save us froir absolute ruin." II New Zealand has to trust to two such rotten cables as tlic.-ein'the day of storm there will be one Enfihsh colony the less and one wreck tbe hiore,
The doctrine that Banks constitute not only a rotten cable, but one of special rottenness is not calculated to inspire sensible people with -respect for the Government or to justify ihem in affirming their sanity, No Government, especially a penniks one, can afford to flout Banks, or hope to tide over a bad time by disparaging monetary institution?. However, this sort of thing is only part and puree! of the mad folly of our rulers, and will bring »bout further retribution, For nil practical purposes the Labour Journal is useless. In its last number it tells us what everybody knows: that in Auckland unskilled labour is overstocked, that in Gisborne it is not in great demand, (hut in. Wanganui it is plentiful, that in Jfasterton a good many men ore out of work, tliut in Pahiatua'a good many men hare presumably been looking for employment, that in Nelson a number of men oro reported out .of employment, that in Wellington a large number of men have applied to be employed and at Ohristchurch Ihp same tale. It is idle to continue our quotations or to prolong tbe horrible iteration, All over the Colony (here is widespread distress, and neither the Labour journal nor the Government can do much to relieve it. At the same time by flinging stones at Banks and kindred institutions it is in their power to intensify it. Of course lliey do not miss this opportunity I
