Carterton v. Red Stars.
A match was played bulween the first fifteens of tbeabovo at Carterton on Saturday, and resulted in a rather hollow victory for tbo Stars by seventeen points to three. The scoring was made up by tries obtained by Butement, Skinner (2), und T. Welch (2), ono of which was converted by Etnmetfc. lelford scored a try for Carterton, Tbo bnoks of tho Stars were far superior to those of tho looal team,aml the noat passing of Hansen, Cargill and Do Joux was seen to considerable advantage. Wrigley played a fine game at lull, and Skinner upbeld his reputation by putting in some plucky work at three-quarter. Booth was the only back conspicious for Carterton, and ho did the lion's share of the work in a brilliant stylo. Tho forwards of llio Stars were not by any means strong, and the local men wore superior in this department. Emmett, T. Welch and Wilsono were 'about tho best, and tfftd hard to keep tbeir man together'. Moore and Fairbrotker played a rattling game for the losers, and gave the visitors no end of trouble, A high wind was blowing throughout the match. Mr Cochrane acted as referee, in a fair and impartial manner.
Tbe Gieytown United first play the Stars at Masterton on May sth, and the return at Greytoivn on May 12th. J
A good practice game was played on tho Worksop Hoad ground on Saturday, about twenty members o£ the Masterton Club indulging. Jlowlem, Stewart, Jackson, and iKemble, now men for the Club, played each a very fine game, and some of the older members of tbe first fifteen will have to give place to them this' season, D'Arcy, Watson and H. We must stile that the Teathorstonians were weakened by the absence of four of their best men, 'namely, the two Greens, Spackman and II ally.
