Wairarapa Daily Times. [ESTABLISHED 1878.] FRIDAY, APRIL 20, 1894. THE MASTERTON SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
It will be noticed that seven mepi bers of the Masterton School Conn mittee have been nominated foi re-election. During the past yeai they have made an exceptionally gooi record, cfficienily discharging theii various duties, and aboiying in tlwii BCOounts a credit balance of an unusu all)' substantial character. To mos people it would appear that in tl)i interests of the school it would hi des'table that the old Coromitteo mei nhonld bo re-electo3, Members o local bodies are not always successfu in their undertakings, but when the; do make a good record it is cerlajt)l; to the advantage of tbe public tha their aetvicea should be retained. Wi are told, however, that there is to h organised opposition to tlie re-eleo'.iot of the old Committee, and when wi inquire on what grounds they an objected to, we learn that their politi cal colour is wroi g. It is said tha certain lights of the Liberal Party «ri to be brought forward against them This may or may not be true, but ai it is understood that certaih men an to be put up as dark horses at the las foment ajid elected by a sort 0 coup d'elut we cannot verify tbi ppour, nor can we learn whnthei therp js any other reason for tljeii gandidaturo than their politics colour, We consider it is a gravi misfortune for, the school that at attempt should be made to get up i political party fijjbt over school mat ters, Some dozen ypars ago, we an well aware, the school election turnei very much on party politics, and there eult was distinctly disadvantageous ti the interests of education in this town Hie public certainly got sick of mixing up politics with edcipation, and foi several years past they have beer well pleased to know that paftj polices fiave had nothing to do Vfitt the annual election. No dpubt tht new Liberal lights are quite capable pf administering the affitirs.ol (hi Mnsferton School, and if they manifested a genipe interest jn its advancement we should not say i wo , s ß a ' ns ' 'hem, But if their onh object in coming forward is a political one, then we say they are sacrificing the best interests of the school ant injuring the cause of education in this town. We hope the residents ol Masterton will not again allow thoii achojjl tp becojrie a political shuttle l popk for fjie benefit pf some newfledged Liberal Association rohic) wants a job, We oopider too t'bjkl if the Association in question intend _ to return candidates they should h&vt ppt up their names openly instead ol bringing them forprjj on the night of ejectiofj, rs'
