WAIRARAPA AND EAST COAST P. AND A. SOCIETY.
The following report! of the above BDdiD 6 toh " • Ist, IBM, ■ jnll belpwsented at the ■ ■' in presenting th'e Mieet for the year haye the congratulatememberßuponan amount 1 * of substantial progress unprecedented id the history of the Sooiety. It is true that tn exceptionally severe winter prevented mow than a nominal increase in the number of exhibits at the November Show, but tha: all-round, quality was most favorably commented upon by the Judges in the various sections. The figures given in the Balance Sheet show that after payment of the winery charges for the year, and makug allowance for every doubtful U dett, the Society \m been able to re« I duceits indebtednessbyiflfl 10s3d fl and also to expend £202 fcjOd in the 8 purchase, clearing, and ffingofthe- ,*M additional land. »^aaH The year's a clear gain of £30112s W.'lt will! be observed that the total liabilities of the Sooiety have now been reduced to a little over £6oo,involving an annual charge of about £7O.
It is obvious that as long as this heavy charge has to be met, it means a less liberal prize list • a consequent discouragement of exhibitors'and a ' postponement of desirable improvements to the Show Grounds, A building for dairy and other produce ' for instance is a matter of pressing necessity. Your Committee would therefore suggest that the new executive should give consideration to tbiß question, with a view to inviting subscriptions for extinguishing tLe debt of the Society at an early date. An increase of £2B was made in the amoiiDt paid as prizes by the d Society, gold and silver medals re- J maining about the same as for the I previous year. The total value of J private prizes awarded in money and jfl plate amounted to the handsome BumMßjn of mz u^MfcugAdWamm silver medal. Iho^Wmywm cii ly indebted to the various donors of these prizes in town and country. On both Show days the weather was all that could be desired, and the attendance, the largest ever known in the district. Tt ia very gratifying to note the interest taken in the welfare of the Society by the ladies of the distriot, and the cordial thanks of the members are due for the handsome flag presented by ihem. •The membership of the Society thought slightly increased is a matter to whioh your committee again invite attention. The list could be largely increased in the outlying districts with great advantage to tho Society. To the Stewards who did a great ■ deal of hard work on both days of the Show nnd alpo to the Secretary the warmest thanks of the Society are ' due, courtesy, punctuality, and des- ■ patch being the order of the day in every branch. One of the most difficult (asks of the Society being the selection of Judges, it is satisfactory to note that the Kentlemenjekctcd gave general ' *"" the thanks oftlm Society. The President, Vice-President, Auditor, Treasurer, and ten members of Committee retire in accordance with the rules, and you will be called Upon to elect their successors.' W. C. Buchanan, President."
