CARTERTON.
(From Our Own Correspondent,) Wednesday. We have coming on' the annual election of Wardens to fill five vacancies caused by the retirement by rotation of Messrs W. B. Allen, G. W. Deller, W. Miller, J. Rayner, and J. Stevens, on the Taratnhi-Carterfon Koad Board. The old members will Btand again, but. in two or more instances they will bo opposed. In No, 7 sub-division, which for years haß been represented by Mr Allen, there are two new ratepayers spoken of as coming candidates—tMeesrs A. Daysh and T. Moore, junr. This district comprises Taratabi West, and owing to the sale of Ciown lands on the Tararuas, a lot of new names have been added to the roll. This disturbing element will be felt at the poll adversely by the sitting member, as the ratepayers in the newly opened district will rote for Mr Mooro, whose property lies in the same quarter, on the hills, Mr Daysh will have many supporters as there are always plenty of ratepayers to bo found who desire to see " new blood " on the Board. Mr W. Fisber is spoken of aa an opponent to Mr Deller for No, 3 Subdivision. His desires go chiefly in the direction of making drastio changes in the administration with a view to reducing the cost thereof, and in this he will get a certain amount of support. In the present Warden he will find a stout opponent and one difficult to upset, This part of the district is South Carterton, to the east of the main, road, For the other three wards no "dfte. of standing iB prominently mentioned, but aYtlie nbininations do not close till the 26th instant there is yet plenty of time,
t You will Lavo received notioo of ' our Library Committee having sent a [ draft (or £65 to Mr C, B. Carter for a supply of n«w books, Mr Carter i has ulways taken a lively interest in i the town, which is named after him. \ It has been customary for him to Belect personally whatever books are ', ordered for our library, and it is probably duo to this fact that Carterton boasts such a splendid library. The Committee send a list of books they desire, yet leave Mr Carter » free hand, and in this they show their wisdom, for, being on the spot M; Carter is hotter able to solect publications "up to dale," and books of good worth, Knowing what Mr Csrter has done for Wellington, and bis literary tastes, it is a wonder other Library Committtes have not followed the example of Carterton in getting their books soleoted in lon* don through tbe same channel. Possibly it is because the advantage has not been prominently brought under tbe notico of other Committees, yet that cannot bo the reason in so far as MastertOH is concerned, for the benefits that bare accrued to their neighbouring town through tip kindly actiors of Mr Carter must be well known there,' It is not only in tbe reading, hut also in tbe binding of the books sent through (iiisoourse 'hat such a gain is made, for most of the volumes sent are in cloth or half , calf, '
