We notice that a pensioner, of the 1 Benevolent Society clamours for wortt instead of charity. Now a request of this kind ought to be promptly complied with. Some years ago when the present writer was connected with the same Society a similar demand was made by an ailing man with the usual large familyr It was met, and instead of-the unfortunate applicant receiving ten shillings a week as a dole he earned "eighteen shillings a week by labour furnished through the instrumentality of the Society, and after a few mouths struok for twentylour shillings, and not getting the rise severed his connection with the institution The present Truafcaes could easily arrango with the County or Borough for keakiug up say a hundred yards of road metal, aud then net the willingman, who now employment, to useful work, The; County and Borough find all the money that goes to the unemployed, and it is absurd to suppose that they would not be glad of a quid pro jiw such as we have suggested.
