Wairarapa Daily Times. [ESTABLISHED 1878.] THURSDAY, APRIL 12, 1894. THE TOWN SEWER.
The creek running through the heait of Maaterton. in, according to the official report, a common sewer excepting in one or two trifling particulars, An ordiD&ry sewer is subterranean, bag a convenient passage for sewage which is excluded from contaminating the atmosphere. TJ}e town creek'has a passage for sewage wbioli is obstructed every few yards, aud tile sewage itself couiea into direct contact with the atmosphere, and is drank by the cowa which are compelled to imbibe the water in which it has a lodging. Without being a sewer the town creek is used as one, and has for many years past, been an unmi'igated nuisance. Complaints about it have been frequent for the past dozen years, and now and again some little effort has been made to abate the nuisanoe but no decisive step towards absolute purification has ever been attempted, When the creek is very had it is usual to eay it might be worse and to clean it up a little till once more its stenches become unendurable, The Borough Oounoil has never put its foot down and said the creek shall be kept clean, and till it does this it would be unreasonable to expect its Inspector to put hie foot down, more especially'as this officer is well aware that his employers, the Borough Council, are (directly responsible for some of the Abstractions io the ohanuel, and if he (lit) put ||is foot down he woijld have to tread on the Municipal toes, We believe, however, that any dispassionate critic who read the mild recital of facts in tbe recent report presented by the Inspector, must como to the conclusion that the condition of the creek is a disgrace to the town and a menace to the health of its inhabitants. We trust tlijs tjme the Borough Connpjl wil| not be coptent with merely recording its unsavoury stale and deprecating tbo report of its Inspector, but will face the difficulty by taking every step necessary io secure absolute cleanliness throughout' its channel. There is nothing new in the Inspector's report, nothing but what has been generally known and deplored for the last dozen years; but wo hope io see a ney departure in the way in which it is de&li with by the pivio fathers.
