TENUI NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) . A crioVet match was played on Thursday last in Maunsell's paddock between teams representing the married and single. The henediots were captained by Joplin, and the bachelors by F. Niotiolla. The Utter went to the wickets first, and succeeded in I knocking up 41, R. Owen (12) and' Darling (10) being the chief scorers. The benedicts, not feeling at home I with the deliveries of their youthful !opponents, were soon got rid of for) 24. The young fry were juhilant, and took the bat with great confidenoe ( | thinking they had an easy chance to score one against the old atngera, but woes followed quiokly, and they were disposed of for 24 runs, Joplin and Perry bowling with a trifle too much 1 ounning, With .69 to get to scoie a win the "fathers" went in a seoond time, and, tell it not ia Gath, they gave their juniors a taste of their strength. Watson and Joplin got together, and, by hard hitting, and quick running, which tried their wind to the utmost, knocked up 40 before they were separated, and the bene* dicta winning an interesting match by ona wicket and 12 runs; Joplin 29, and Watson 20, were the highest Bcorera for the and Owen 12, and 15, and Darling 10, for the losers. Joplin, Perry, Owen, and Nioholls bowled well for their respective sides. Friday last wag a red-letter day in Tenui. The school children held their annual picnic in the sohool grounds. Great interest is always talten in it by parents and settlers, aid, judging by the large number present it is not flagging, Battlers came from far and near, some as far as 30 miles, It seomß to be an annual gathering of the clans, and strongly commends Itself for the hearty display of friendliness and good-will, There was plenty of everything contributed by wiliing hearts and bands to help the youngsters to enjoy themselves, To see the bappy faces around it made one wish he were a youngster again, and, when sitting round the heavily laden tables, waited upon by young and smiling maidens, one could not holp thinking school life is not how it was when''when we were youn° together," Cakes, sandwiobes, tarts, puffs, fruit, and other delicacies were there in abundance, and the way tbe youngsters attacked them showed their appreciation of the effortß of the various oooks in catering for them, It is very hard to single out for praise any individuals who assisted in the day's pleasure, as they all worked admirably. The Committee did their best to secure the comfort of their visitors, In the ovening dancing was kept up till an early hour" noxt morning. The music was supplied by Mrs Raleigh, the Misses Speedy, and Messrs Southey and Perry. Mrs Manguson and Messrs Dumarosque, Martin, and Cameron several songs which were much appreciated. to some misunderstanding the prizes did not arrive in time to be distributed that evening. It has been decided to distribute tbem on Friday evening, 20th inat., when a sooial will be held at the Public Hall on the same evening, Several local vocalists and iusirumentalists have kindly promised to assist.

This has been a remarkable fruit season as fir as Tenui is concerned. Apples have been grown to i very large size, some weighing two pounds and a half each.
