SECOND EDITION Wairarapa Daily Times. [ESTABLISHED 1878.] MONDAY, APRIL 9, 1894. THE TOWN LANDS TRUST.
The Town Lands Trust ia the onl public body in Maatcrton which iB i a position to find money for niucli needed improvptnents in the Master ton Park; it lias an annual inoome t about' six hundred pounds, and well-filled long atockiug besides froi its (livings and accumulations. It i possible that tho Town Lands Trut prefers putting its money into its lon stocking, and if it can avoid it n grant will go to the Park. It apparently trying, by putting off th Park Trustees, to force tbem to kirn over the reserve to the Borough Com oil, But this would hardly b.enef the Park, as the Jlorough has r money to spare for Park improvi ments, while the Town Lands Tim bas. The facts are very M Renall, himself a Trustee of the Tow Lands Trust, suggested that the Pai should be handed over to thut bod The Park Trust concurred in th Lproposal and offered fo transfer, i PrTown Lands Trustees put off tl obdsideration of the offer and unoffic ally assured the Park Trustees tbi they could not entertain it, but mig] give a grant towards the Park. Tl Park Trustees then asked for a grai and so far have failed to obtain a rep to'their request The sole hope making substantial improvements the Piirk rests with the Tow Lands Trußt! If they refuse ar tho people of Mastertoh endori their refusal, then, of course, it may! desirable to hand the reserve, over i the Borough Council, and let it folio the fate of the Borough fountaii We qnestion whether it is advan ageons to allow the Town Lands Tru to force the Park Trustees to surrei der to the Borough Council, mere! that the former body may be relievt of any obligation to contribute towan it. The broad question for the peopi of Masieiton is simply whether tl Masterton Park is to be improved ar where the money lor such improvi ments ia to come from ? If the peop agree that improvements are to 1 effected and that the Borough Count is to carry them out from the Boroug rates, there .will be no difficulty. I) the other hand, if tho people coneidi that the' Town Lands Trust with i large income and comfortable accumli tions ought to assist, then the Ton Lands Trust will, no doubt.contribul It is very probable, however, that tl present Trustees may decide togii the grant asked for. The Town Lane Trust has always dealt liberally b the Park in the past, and we scarcel think, however, glad it might be f see the Borough Council step into il shoes/that it will reject the applica tion now before it.
