CARTERTON.
(From Our Own Correspondent).. Wednesday. The Borough Council having stopped the graut to tho Firrßrigade a deputation from that body waited on the Council at its meeting yesterday. The Mayor spoke in strong terms of the neglect of the Brigade iu not looking after the' plant and keeping up the eioienoy of its members, and otherwise justified the action of the Council in stopping the grant. The Captain, in proof of their efficiency, referred to tho recent fire at Mr Booth's mill,' which they, had reached with, promptitude, and had been instrumental in saving a great deal of vakable property,"for whioh they received from the proprietor a letter of thanks and a oheque for £5. It was ultimately deoided to pay the grant to the 81st current,and continue it conditionally on the Brigade keeping up their efficiency. It was resolved to give notice that a rate of |d in the pound be made for the coming year. This, it. was esti» mated, after meeting cost of administration, paying off.the overdraft, and meeting all Other ascertained charges would leave £Bl4 for road maintenance.
