WORK AND WAGES.
HuAknt-ParkrandUlS, Co. (By Telegraph.—Press Aißooiatjon.) Wellihowh, Friday.. Mr J. A. Millar,M.H.R,Seere. tary of the Federated Seamen's Union Jof New Zealand has written as follows to the Wellington Trades and Labour Counoil:— "The 8,8. Tasmania is running oyer here with; men reoeiving lower wages than is being paid by the Union Steam Sbip Company, and unless we can bring pi)blio opinion to bear upon Euddart, Parker so as to force them to pay the same wagos bb the Union Company, lam informed that the latter will probably reduce the wage-sheet to the Bamo level. As you can see this would be a serious matter to the Colony, bb it would mean the withdrawal of a large sum monthly from circulation, besides being an incentive to employers generally to reduce wages, would yobr Council pass and publish a resolution requesting the publio to patronise our local steamers until Huddsrt, Parker pay the district wage." It was resolved last night to refer the letter to the Trades Council's Conference to be held in Auckland shortly, Mr Murrell, Messrs Huddarfc'i representative' here,' says that the rats' of wages on" Tasmania" is aooording to t|e scale paid on all the Australian vessels hut is lower than 1 the Union Company's. He does not see how it could be alteiad without owners on the other side, He thi ks possibly the difficulty might bo .got . over by registering the: vessel, htre, i but cannot say definitely whit will be I done until be consults the proprietors, buths is. ineiined 'to? believe they would bare no objietion ttfdo this, "
