UCENSING, ;v ". ■The Returning Officer of the Masterton Electoral ; Distriot wrote asking that £228 be placed tg an imprest; account for' bis use at t.be forthcoming Licensing eleotion3, The Chairman said he did not think tuey,should agree to an imprest ac« count* but should insißt on vouchers for all payments 'made, as the South County was doing, They had no funos,,and he did not know where the money \vas coming from, as they were already/overdrawn, i The whole thing seemed ridiculous, audit would cost more to carry out the .ejeotion than the amount of lioense fees contributed. Or llaunaell considered that in justice to the ratepayers .they were entitled to so'me particulars as to how ltnvas proposed to expend the sum asked for.
Tho Chairman said they were bound to .pay the charges, but' be thought this should not'be done until the vouchers were beforeihem. Or Cookburn-Hood said'that they were dealing with '.be ratepayers' money,'and had to be careful. STRAY CATTLE. James Cooper aud others of Newman, wrote requesting that cattle might be allowed to graze on the roads during the summer, to keep down the grass and ferns wliioli increased the danger of fires. The OhairmaG explained that it was not advisable to. grant the rc.t quest, because stray cattle damaged drains and sometimes caused accidents to persons travelling after dark, for which tho County Council might be held responsible. Or Beetham seconded, and the motion was carried, ' . TRACTION ENGim ""V Messrs G. Chamberlain, Mutrio, tapper, Buick and Burton, waited on the Council to object to certain clauses in the'. proposed tractionengine by-law.
Mr Gapper said that as the question was one of importance ind should not be hurried, they proposed that a subcommittee of the Council meet the traction-engine owners at a date to be arranged, They would like that there bo a uniformity between the North and Bouth County, and were of the opinion that the disoussioa would take up more time than the Council could spare at the present meeting, After discussion, the alterations' - suggested by the engine-owners were read out, and ■it was reaolved that a committee of the. The': 14th Maroh at 8 p.m., was fixed as the date for holding tho preliminary meeting for the £l5O Alfredton loan. Decided that the portion of Manawa proposed to be excluded from the rating area of tho Te Ore Ore-Bideford loan of £SOO be included theroin, and that the preliminary steps bo taken to raise the loan,' AKITIO FERRY. It was rosolved to Bend a copy of Mr A. W. ' ROAD DEVIATION. 'HKmucil resolved that stops be takfiWo make the road deviation at Mauriceville, asked for by Mr Kennedy, under the Public Works Aot, ■Mr Kennedy to bear the cost. TE ORE ORE ROAD DRAIN. Mr Torrey attonded to represent that the clearing of the main drain on the Te Ore Ore road, complained of by Mr Cave, was not in his contract for maintenance. The Council decided to request Mr Torrey to complete the Work as required, and then approach the Council for an allowance.
FINANCE ItBPORT, Tho Finance Committee's Report was read and adopted and accounts passed for payment. enoineer's report, The recommendation that £35 of next year's revenue in the Wainuioru Riding be anticipated was agreed to. Resolved ti request the various bridge contractor? to proceod more speedily. The Report was then adopted. mr-qrevihe's report. Resolved that Mr tireville be authorized to prepare plans and invite tenders for extending the drain on the Mount Baker Road Swamp, and that the County Engineer prepare the conditions under which tho work is to be done. Resolved to inform Mr T. H. Groves, that the Engineer will examine the Tawaitai Oreek to ascertain the best means of increasiug the flow, to relieve the Mount Baker Road drain/^ It was decided to direct Mr Greville's attention to the timber left in the embankment on tho Mount Baker Road contract No. 1, and that he be directed to seo it removed before the work is finally passed. The report was then adopted. SUSPENSION BRIDGE. With reference to Mr John Smith's application for a suspension'bridge over the Tiraumea River,it was agreed that as soon as the consent of the Land Board bo obtained, tlio work be proceeded with without iurther notico from tho Council.
