A decent looking swaggor mado his way into Catterton ou Friday, aud was given a casual job by a shopkoepw to help him on his way to Masterton. lie said he had tried in vain no get work down the valley, aud intended to soek employment on the co-operative works in the Forty Mile Bueli, aud for that purpose had given in his name a few weeks back, but had to wait his turn at there were many appliojuts. At oae place k the Wairaraps where he had endeavourod to get a job at road work he was told by the man In oharge that he was too old for that tort of work. He said as he was only forty years of age the crime of being old could not fairly be laid to his charge. He learned from the men at work that they were getting £1 a week and their " tucker," The latter they had to prepare' for themselves in their own time, hinoa starting the job tho men had discovered that the local Board had let the work to the property owner who was employing them with the understanding that ho was to pay tho men at the rate of 6s fid per day. If this statement is correct the laborers do not get tho best of tho bargain. There is, howover, only the swagger's word for it, and that (says tho Observer) mast be taken for what it is worth.
