EKETAHUNA NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Two men named J. Campbell and N, Greenwood wore sentenced to one month's imprisonment, by Messrs Alex. Anderson and Henry Aulin J. P's at Eketahuna yesterday, for the theft of apples valued at 6d, from Ah Lin, tlielocal Chinaman. Another man named J. Dunn, was fined 20? or in default 14 days imprisonment for severely assaulting tho. samn Chinaman. N The sentence ol tbe Court was a great surprise. That the man who bad severely assaulted tho Chinaman should get off <<o lightly, and the other two, who merely took a few appleß and subsequently offered to pay for them, should be sentenced to a month's imprisonment sterna out of all reason. Greenv/ojd has beon in the Eketabuna district for the last six years, and is known to be a bard-working man* Campbell is a Sydney man, abont three months resident in the Colony. A very heavy gale, with drenching rain, was experienced here on Friday and Saturday last. Considerable damage was done to fenres and gardens, tbe fruit trees suffering severely, being completely stripped of their burdens. The rain and wind h s d stroyed tbe grass tbat was ready for threshing, The elements seem to be against the settlers. of this district. Some thousands of pounds worth of grass has been burned by bush firo s , and what waß spared has now been destroyed by the late atorm. In very many instances settlers have beea trusting to Ibe crop of teed to tido thorn over tbe winter.
