THE NAVAL MUTINY IN BRAZIL.
Rio de Janeiro, January 29. The negotiations which Marshal Peixoto (President of the Republic), the American Admiral do Gams, who is commanding the insurgents in the absence of Admiral de Mello, undertook with the view of securing the cessation of hostilities,- have failed, and fighting has boen resumed,
. The five torpedo boats purchased by the Brazilian Government in Germany have arrived at Pernambnco. January 30.
In endeavouring to mediate between the bellijjorents, the Admiral of the American squadron declined to treat with Admiral de tiana unless he became reconciled to President Peixoto, but the rebel leader refused to listen to'this proposition. On the other band, Marshal Peixoto, declined to receive the American Admiral, and the latter look-} upon the refusal as an insult to the Amerioan navy. When the rebel warships.began the cannonade on two American ships, the rebels of the American squadron cleared their decks for aotion, whereupon firing ceased. Ibe traders were .then escorted to berths by the warships, and theMooident passed off without bloodshed.
London, January 30, The ommanders of the foreign warships at Rio de Janeiro report that the insurgents have complete control of the harbour. The are asking their respective Governments ifl they will use force to protect the mercantile shipping. Sydney, January, British ships arriving here continue to bring reports of narrow esoapes from shooting by the belligerent forces in Rio harbour.
