SECOND EDITION
We have received a copy oE the balance sheet of the Wairarapa Far' mere' Co-pperative Association, distributed in view of iiu coming annua) meeting, apfl have perused its contents nith considerable interest, as we, in common with piany others, are watching the development of this great undertaking as being one which, from its magnitude, affects greatly the prosperity of the district. No doubt, when the annual meeting takes place, we shall gel a further exposition cf its affairs from the able directors who control them, but the printed sheet itself without further introduction or explanation is a very satisfactory production. It is noticeable as being the first balance sheet published hyjthe Association which covers a complete yehjc of operations, and whiob disposes the of the'largest commercial enterprise in the Wairarapa. At its present rate of progress it may shortly be expeoted to have a turnover of a hundred thousand pounds, though at present it has only r.eacbep abojjt tbree-flgartjßrs. of this sum. Still, its rapid' expansion will soon pjace' it level with the larger round total, which, for a country busjness is something gigantic' Its shareholders purnber plpjp on one thousand, anoj when rflviejvinjj its figures we begin to realise that the Wa(raraps iflijst be .growing! into a Wealthy, popnlflue diafeiat tfhjch y?il} yet .tale a Ming position jn flip Colony, During the past year jwo features of the Association have been Very gratifying. JJr Butemenfc has expressed his willingness to deliver lectures to the membora of the Maatorton Boys' Olub, on " First Aid " and " Physiology " at an early date, Wo understand that the other Masterton medicos are ako to be asked to give lectures, The Pahiatua Herald states that Mr Mowbray, of Tutaokara, has received a letter irom Mr A, W, Hogg, M,8,8„ stating that the sum of £I4OO has been placed on the supplementary estimates lor tho formation of thornadfromHawera junction to tho flukanui railway station, and £4OO for formation of the road from the Hukanui railway station to Kaikairiki. Dr Newman and Mr Hogg have been hammering away on this subject for a considerable rime, and have certainly earned the thanks of residents in that part of the Bush for their efforts,
Mr Nicholson, having written to the Secretary of the Metropolitan Olub for an interpretation of the rule relating to trainers and jockeys, (says the Examiner) has' received a reply that any person training a horse on a public ground, whether his own horse or not, is to procure a trainer's license. In the case of a person being both a trainer and a jockey, he has to take out two licenses, The Woodville schools have been olosed for a fortnight owing to the proValence of measles,
Death has been busy at Mangatainoka (says the I'ahiatua Herald), On Mouday morning the thiee-year-nld daughter ol Mr Andrew Bent)y bucoumbed to an attack of measles, and on the following day the four and a half year-old son of Mr William "Wiles died from t]ie same cause.
As a wind-up to the dancing Beasun at Pahiatua a private ball was held last night, by invitation of the ladies, in the Publio Ball, when a large gathering tripped the light fantasic till an early hour in the morning, The protective works carried out by Mr W. H, Kelson on the Manawatu .promise to be a great success, The plan adopted, in addition to planting willows along the bank, has been to Ik the willows placed along the in-wash by wires attached to stout stakes or stout willows, planted some distance from the bank. This not only maintains them in poeition but acts as a throw-off to the current.setf Ing up a shingle bank behind. The system is a simple one, and one which can be carried out at comparatively small cost, If it provts tho success anticipated, the experiment will be of great yaluo to settlers whose land is being scoured away by the river.—Examiner, Larrikinism is still rampant in Pahiatua, Last evening, while yet " the shados of evening were falling fast" some hoodlums of an older growth tore up the horse post in front of MrChlng Ting's store and carried it away, while Mr A, Stewart's horse post suffered the same fate, The audacity of the act requires tjjaf its perpetrators should be discovered and dealt with in an exemplary manner. On Sunday evening last another gang of idiots amused (?) thenißolves by disturbing the churcli service at Mangatainoka." The frequency of these acts demands that Bpe'cial steps should be'taken to cheek the growing tendency to lßrrikiniili), -Horald,'

The twenty-first anniversary of the Masterton Court Loyal Enterprise, A.0.F,, was celebrated last evening in the Temperance Hall by a very successful social and dance. At 6.30 about 50 persons sat down to an excellent spread provided by Mr Colin Winchester, and after this portion of tie programme, the hall was cleared for dancing. Mr A, von Keisenberg and Mr Caudy provided the music and fully fifty couples tho. roughly enjoyed themselves till rooming, Songs were given at intervals in a highly appreciated, manner, and all the arrangements were without a fault, Great Credit is due to the untiring energy of the Secretary, Mr E. Pragnell, who was considerably lightened of his duties by tho help of Messrs E.'fl. Waddington and J, Walker, officers of the Lodge. The adjourned maintenance case Dew v. Dew, was pgain before the K.M. Court thia morning, Mrs Dew asked permission to withdraw tho case, which was granted.
Mr J. Bennett, foreman of the jury, in the Crawford case (says the Hawkes- Bay Herald), at the adjournment for tea asked His Honor if it were necessary for the' jury to be escorted. through the strsets by a policeman when going to their meals. His Honor said it could hot bo avoided unless the juiy were kept in a stuffy roam, He bad always under« stood lhat the wait out to meals was preferred. Mr Bennett said it looked ridiculous to foe a lot of men in ohargo of a policeman, Besides, somebody might some day ask a member of the jury if he had ever boeu in charge, His Honor could not see why anyone should think it ridioulous for a policeman to attend the 'jury, and as for the other point, if anyone chose to bo foolish enough to ask whether a member of the jury, had been in charge, why should not the juryman tell the truth and say " Yes ?" The little interludo caused some amusement in Court, ind whoa it was over the jury went.to tea. We have been requested by Mr Clark to correct an etror in Messrs Lowes and lows' report of tho pedigree of the entire colt Uosoneath Prince. The celebrated mare Damsel was his grand dam, sho being the dam of his sire Orown Prince. The dam of Mr Clark's celt was Missie who took raauy honours in Otago show rings,

The expenditure on all works and services throughout the Oolony under the Fublio Works Funds, up to the 31st March hut, including t|ie purchase of the provincial and district railways, has amounted to £28,887,434.
