A Grand Succm
The Indies who have bo successfully carried on a aeries of socials in aid of the funds of St, Matthew's Oburoh, during the winter months, announced some time ago their intention of giving the children of Masterion a social to themselves, and the little ones lidv© been on the tiptoe of expectation for a considerable, time. Last eveqing the promised dance eventuated, and although the weather was extremely unpleasant, the little folks came from far and near, the majority being attired in picturesque fanny costumes. Of course the wet evening caused a great disappointment to severat who would otherwise have been present, bat we are glad to heir that the Committee of jJaoagemcnt
have decided to hold another gate- : tog upon the same'lines, a few weeks hence, Coneideiablyovor one hundred children were present last evening, and a number of parents and friends. A large variety of characters were re* ;'■ presented by the'young folks, Borne of the dresses being extremely novel and pretty. Several adults were also pre- - sent in fanoy attire, and helped the little people to thoroughly enjoy themselves, A grand march opened the proceedings, in which all present took part, and it wa?, indeed, a pretty sight, Dancing was indulged in during the evening, iaterpersed with singing and games, and a more enioyajile • few hours' amusement could-*t be desired, Although it is nearly antler of impossibility to mention all "tiiie '■ costumes represented at the gathering the following were the most noticeable ones :—Elden Moore," Punch "; Winnifred Moore, "Judy"; Julie Perry, "Black Diamond"; Bessie Payton, " Queen ot the Gypsies"; Mary Boddington," Baby "; G. H. Aslall, "M. kA. Sundowsor"; Tottie Payton," Fairy"; Hflltes, "Fred Arohpr";Alice Payton,"Frenoh Fishwife"; Harry Perry, "JaokTar";. E. Boddington, " Maori Woman " j MaudieWagg, "Folly"; J. Bodding! ton, "Cricketer"; N. Holmwood, "Maori woman"; Violet Boddington, "Oomin 'thro' the Bye"; Nora Moore, "Autumn"; W. Jeffries, "Mothor Shiplon"; E. Holmwood, "Pirate King"; D, Graham, "Hans, the Boatman', ; Masters Hutchison (2) "Sailors" ; A, D'Aroy, "Judge" jB, Niool, "Lady Student" ;H. Smith, "Tennis"; W. Broad,."Pirate"; L. Nicol, "Dick D,udeye" j. K, Williams, "Summer"; Ivy O'Connor, "Outlaw," Pretty evening dresses . were worn by the following little ladies, the characters of whom were diffioult to ascertain:—Misses Muriel Bag'ge, Maggie Sellar, Ivy Hooper, l*ora Hatbaway, Annie Sellar, D'Arcy, Hutchison, Harvey (2), Gva O'Conner, Ellie Bremner, Pearl Culleu, Maudin Holmwood, Cookburne, ling (2),' Jago. Besides the above li&t, there wero tL large number in plain dress, who ajlfj peared to enjoy the fun quite as well as the others. Mr Jeffries in the obaraoter of Mother Sbipton, gave a topical Bong with excellent effect, and had to respond to a tuost decided encore. Before the proceed* ings terminated, cheers were called for the managing ladies, and heartily re* to. The Committee are certainly to be congratulated upon the success i.f tho gathering, and itwas one of the prettiest Bights we have witnessed in Masterton,
