By' Telegraph.—Press Association.)
Auckland, September 10.
Inspector flickson is still continuing his crusade against the inmates of houses of ill-fame. A case against one was taken to-day. Mr J, 0' i/leaglier appeared for the defendant. He said Bhe was still too unwell to attend, but he would plead guilty, rather than the case should be further adjourned, Mr John Gordon said the Bench was not called upon to express an opinion on thia matter, as it had already been argued out. He thought, however, that the owners of property ocoupied by these wnm should be punished. They had no right to reap reward by this traffic. He did not know whether tbe by-law dealt with that mutter. Inspector Hickson said it did not, but in soma parts of New Zealand a landlord could be proceeded against. He had been told that ono landlord in Auckland received three times the proper rent for one of those houses, That was the olass of psrsona who ought to be dealt with. Mr Prime said he quite agreed with Mr Go; dun's remarks. He thought this evil had been very much repressed when theCD, Act was in forou. Inspector Hicksou B»id lw had had the administration of that Act elsewhere, and know its Value. Mr O'Meagher said it was'a great pity 1 that, the Act was ever abrogated in this city. The Bench i;iflioteu a fine of 20s and cosh upon di'feudant, time being allowed m which to pay, as she was unwell,
