The income tax has been tolerated so far because the Government in collecting it havs oarefully kept out of view a certain cloven. foot which belongs to it, Very shortly tko cloven foot will be revealed and the public will be able to judge this form of taxation, or imposition as the case may be, on its merit*. The Comminui> tier of Taxes is now inviting applications for an officer to be called an Accountant, who has had considerable experience in commercial bouses, Id the words of the Department "one important part of his duty will be to make, by dirrotion of the Commissioner of Taxes, an examination of boob and accounts when it should be expedient to have such an investigation in order to ascertain income," This means that a smart man is to travel round the country poking his nose into people's books in order to ascertain their incomes. This is the cloven foot of the income lax to which tho public in i this colony are about to be introduced,
