BALANCE NOTES.
(Prom Our Own Correspondent)^/; :•. Hip Hip Hurrah I : Thelun haß v been sbining bright and Warm on thia ' poor waterlogged country again. The last two days have been lovely as regards weather, and both the human and animal world is rejoioing at the ohange, trusting that we may experience a succession of fino days now that the weather has broke at last. Another public meeting was held in the schoolroom last Monday evening to further consider the question of obtainiog an outlet from Ballanca to Woodville by way Special Sottlemeni, and theproposed new bridge aoross the Mnnawatu River. Tne meeting was fairly well attended, by the local settlers, there being also s contingent of members of the Hall Settlement present, accompanied by Mr C.Hall, Mr J. Eaton was voted to the chair and explained why the meeting had been called. He also read correspondence /Mved Jrom Messrs Haggeu anr.Jß| e 0B (he subject. Ho then calltlr.Mr Hall to explain and lay before the meeting suoh information as he possessed. Mr 0, Hall informed the meeting what amounts of money had been promised by the various local bodies on the Woodville side of tho Manawatu river, also that the Hall Settlement badweightedtheniselves to the extent of £7OO for. the purpose of • this bridge and road, the estimated cost of bridge was £2OOO independent of the road, of.whioh there would be about two miles of draining through, the Hall Settlement, to be fell, formed and metalled, lo .bring it to the boundary of the Masterton-Mangahao Block. He now wished to know what the Ballanca settlers were prepared to do in the matter. Considerable disousbiou here took place on the plans and probable cost of tho undertaking, and eventually Mr Eaton proposed: "That the Ballanca Bettlers raise a loan of £SOO for the purpose of com. pleting the unfinished portion of their road to the Hall Special rMpment Block." This was duly Mr Brown moved, an amendment, Jtconded by Mr MoLeod I;" That this matter stand over" for the present until the Government estimates are published, but that this meeting considers this road to be very desirable." The amendment was put and carried with a substantial majority. Votes of thanks to Mr Hall and the Chairman concluded tho meeting,
Our looal School Committee has been very .successful in planting. Gi chains of the sohool ground with shelter trees, Macroearpasand Pinus Insignia, Many of the settlers gave i trees, and Mr W. W. MoOardle gene* rously made a present of a bundle of trees to complete the job, whilst Mesara Kippenbergei- and Barton respectively gave tho post and wire necessary for a protective fence, others doing the labour of planting gratis, thus we have succeeded in making a good beginning in the direction of beautifying tho school ground, at tho very smallest cost possible.
I regret to liav'o to announce tho sad death of Mrs A, Anderson; which i took place last Tuesday. The deceased lady was highly respected in tho settlement, and had made many j friends during her oomparatiye short residence here. Great sympathy is felt for the husband and the little fivo weeks old baby. The'immediate cause of death waiheart disease.... -
