Ordinary Meeting,

The regular fortnightly meeting of the Masterton Borough Council ; was held last; eveniug. Preaent—H(3 Worship the Mayor and Crs Heron, Hessey, Dixon, Yates, Culler,', Feist, iMutrie, Chamberlain and Perry. ' ["" ■ . MINDTES. The minutes of the laefc meeting were read and confirmed. THEWAIPOUA RIVER.. Tho Masterton Town Lands Trus-. tees wrote stating their willingness to share the cost of reporting on protective works for the Waipoua river. On the motion of the Mayor it was decided to leave the matter in abeyance until _ the Park and Cemetery Trusts had replied as to whether they will contribute towards the cost of a report. POONDKKEPER's SALARY. A letter wns received from the Wairarapa North County Oounoil stating that the Council had no recommendation to make re subsidising tho Mastprlon Poundkoeper. At a later stage of the meeting it was decided (in committee) to raise the salary to Lls per annum, BUKOEBB LIST.

Mr 6, 8. W.Dalrymulo wrote offering to supply a street broom for the sum of LB, on a model previously sent to the Council, the Council to pay nothing if tbe machine is not satisfactory. The Mayor considered there could he no harm in accepting Mr Dalrymple's offer, which was accordingly accepted. KURIPUNIFIRE BRIGADE, The Seoreiary of the Kuripuni Fire Brigade (Mr Pybus) wrote asking that the custodian's salary be paid, otherwise he would resign. It was decided to inform tho Secretary of too Brigade thai no salary was'allowed,' but if tho Council made a grant, a proper application .would have to bo made in more respectful termß.

Volunteor Fire Brigade (Mr C, H. i Payne) wrote as follows: i To the Mayor and Councillors, i Gentlemen.—l am authorised to i submit for your consideration the . following resolutions passed at the : last meeting of the Volunteer Ere Brigade:-" That in the opinion of the Brigade it is not desirable to remove tho firebell from its preaeut site in Queen Street, for the following rwaoDß: (1) THat it is directly under the supervision of the police and nightwotobman, thereby preventing false alarms, (2). That it is centrally situated, and mid-way between tho two stations. (3). That us the majority of members of the Brigades live on the north-west Bide of the belltower, it is not advisable to move it in the opposite direolion, especially as tho prevailing winds are from the' north-west for oight months of the year. (4), That in the oventof it being removed and not erected at tho same height as at

present, it will prove a disadvantage as the sound will be confined to a smaller radius, and the area which tho lookout commands will he more limited. \Ve trust you will give this matter due consideration on tho grounds that tho Volunteer Fire Brigado Criginnlly and with difficulty secured the site." Barnes Cavunugh applied to the Council for the sum of £1715s as extras on coutruots undertaken by him from the Council, Mr John King wrote supporting the application, Or Heron said amplo prioes had been allowed for extras to Oavanagh. The sum of £l4los was a liberal sum to pay. The Works Committee had carefully gone into it.' Mr Oavanagh, who said he was not willing to accept £U 10s, Ho was willing to let another engineer estimate the value. The Mayor said the only objection seemed' to be; the'removal of the hell from its present position in Quoen Street. The Volunteer Fire/Brigade' objected on the-grounds'" previously stated in the letter read. . Cr.Oullen said it was deoided.years ago to shift the bell-towor on account of the rent they Or Heron said he 'did not see any objection to shifting the bell. The Council then went into Committee to consider tenders and the question of the Poundkeeper'e salary. The tenders received for the removalofthe Fire Brigade, shed were held over, und it was deoided to invite fresh tenders for a two-Btorey building. QUBEN STREET OUANNELS. It was decided not to accept the tenders for renewing' tho Queen-Bt. channels in conorete, owing to their being too high, but to do the work by day labor. THE WATER SOHEME, Mr King attended with plans and reports prepared by him on the Waiugawa water supply. The %or moved that a special meeting be held on Tuesday evening next to consider Mr Kingtaeport, the plans, etc, to be lodged'with the Clerk for tho use of Councillors only until aftor the Bpeoial meoting, Itwaß adyisablo that the Council disoussed the matter before it became publicCarried. GENERAL It was resolved on the motion of Or Heron, that Mr Natftfch.fc* employed to prepare speoifioations for the new Fire Brigade Buildings. NOTICE OF MOTION,

The Mayor gave notice of motion for next meeting "that the Council take into consideration tho questionof opening up a road'between Short Street and Ebnall Street along the seotion boundaries." He was of opinion that a' number of owners would givo the required .laud, as tho road would enhance the value of the property, and lo a great convenience. Ho was willing to give halfaohain along the boundary of his own property. The Mayor and Or Yatea wero appointed a Committee to interview owners with tho object of ascertaining who was willing to givo land, The Council then adjourned.
