FOOTBALL.

[By Damooles.] The match against Wanganni has been played and won, although tho visiting team wbb admittedly a weak one, tho playpra themselves won' quito satisfied that tho play of Wairarapa would havo been superior to the best team they could procure. My opinion is that Wairarapa can place a' butler team in tho field this season than for tho paßt four or five years, and it is rather a pity that more representative mntchea could not have to bo played in Masterlon. Of courso it is next to impossible to send the full strength of the team on tour. On Thursday, Wairarapa were novor asked to play, and their utmost strength was not ro« quired, They bad an easy victory in Bight, and each man wanted to have a say in the scoring, and by selfish play losUceriain tries timo after time. This was mainly applicable in the forwardyiyisioD, as the backs played Rovoral times pretty prSlng between Hudson, Do Joux, and D'Aroy was utterly spoiled by some of tho forwards taking a hand in it. Wrigloy, as full back, had very little to do, but was safe and ueat in all his work. The tbroc-quartor division were the strongest trio wo have over had, and tho team thai can placo better men thun D'Arcy, Hudson and De Joux in these positions, Lave extraordinary material, D'Arcy Was _ somewhat strange to the position at the opening, but quickly wsrmed up, and gave his opponents a rare ta?to of his speed and splendid kicking before the end. Hudson played the best football on the ground, and never made the slightest mistake. Ho could have scored on several occasions, but having a doubt, passed the ball on in pretty style, This player audDo Joux are, indeed, a fine pair, and play togethor splendidly. De Joux is Certainly a dasher, and being well looked after by Hansen made things, rnfWy'with his brilliant runs. Hansen, as half, excelled himself, and his clean and owift passing out was nothing less ihnn a miracb, This player is coming on fast, and ho may safely be admitted as one of tho best halves in the colony. . Muguire was not Been at his best, and passed out altogether too hiiib, giving bis opponents time to stifle tlio receiver, His collaring and running, hoffevor, wero excellent, and be is undoubtedly tile right man in the right place, Although Greytowu had only two mon in the team, thoy were well represented. Udy wan a regular lien in the forwards, and kept going from first to last. He is one of the finest forwards in the toim Giay, Watson, tho Welchs, and Morris were as usu»l brilliant, but one or two others could safely bo omitted and such dashing players as Kimeniand Welch (Greytown) given a show, Tho off-side play of our forward" was a miserable display, and with a good team against them the match would havo been given away on these grounds alone.

Tbe Maste'rton Club forfeited another junior match on Saturday, by not Bonding a team to Carterton lo meet Feathorston. ~r The Hawke's Bay Union is sending . a representative team to South Canterbury early in September, and will play Wellington on the return. Arrangements will probably bo made for the tour of the Wnirarapa team to be mado about the same time, and a tour-*as*rof ma toheß between Wellington, Wairarapa, andHawko's Bay Will be held at Petono. The teams Will have a big reception at Timaru, and will also be welcomed at Christ-j church, The East Christchurch Club have forwarded a contribution to the New Zealand Union for the presentation to tho team, by way of omphaßising their appreciation of the manner in which they upheld the credit of the Colony. \J The junior cup match between the Greytown and Carterton is to be played at Greytown next Saturday, and is already creating a deal of interest in the Lower Valley. The Winner of this match will hare the junior cup for tho 1893 season well in hand, It is stated that among the young men who arrived by the Ruahine to take up land in tho Tmmki district are several footballers who have played for Oxford and Cambridge University. If that be so, Taranaki should bo stroogly represented next season. The Danevirke footballers are arrangi.l| matches to bo played at eatly dates with ttanij from Oartorton aud Woodvillo, It is reported that Oliphnnt and Herrold, two of tho members of the late New Zealand team, intend to roturn to Sydney shortly) and take tip their residence there permanently, Tbe following team will repro>ent the Orientals against tho W.F.C A, on Thursday next: W. Udy converted, an Knowles ono from which Udy unsuccessfully endeavoured to put the ball over the goal bar. Bothtbeso scores wore obtained within fifteen minutes of tho finish. C. J. Beard as referee, and J. Gallon (Matarniva) and W. Brunlon (Greytown), as lino umpires gave every satisfaction, Palmkbbton Noirni, August 26, Manawatn defeated Wanganui by JGpoiutßtonil.

The local union considered tho matter last night,, and decided that there was not sufficient timo to piny the match, and, besides, they did not desire to interfere with tho dispute between Canterbury and the Mew Zealand Union.
