WELLINGTON NEWS.
SPECIAL TELEGHMS. Wellington, Wednesday. , The Session Itfstow freely rumoured that the sessiOD will come 10 an abrupt torurination about the middle of September. This rumour is somowbat substantiated by the fait that the Government have called upon all the Departments to send in supplementary estimates, a course only taken towards the close of a session, Government Policy. It is quite apparent that the Government have no intention of pressing their policy measures on tho House. They will go to the country wi h tho old parrot cry excuse of opposition and want of time. This session will stand on record as bring one in which nothing has been attempted and nothing done. A New Party. Quite a distinct little party on distinct lines is growing up in the House. At present this party consists only of Sir B. Stout, and Messrs Earnshaw aod O'Conor. It is, however, a neucleus out of which it is fully anticipated a powerful section will urise Prison Officials. Mr Joyce is anxious that the hours Of duty of warders and matrons to prisons should be shortened. \he Minister of lands. It is said that the Minister for Lands will not be opposed to Mr Scobie Mackenzie, as the latter has decided lo stand for another constituency, Bumour Bays that this arranetSiant was arrived at as a lrienuiy compromise as both leared for the safety of their seats if arrayed against one another. Measles. Measles is still very prevalent here. It first attacked children, but now many adults are laid up with this troublesome complaint. The percentage of deaths up to the present has been very small. . The Cheviot Estate. The Cheviot Estate Disposition Bill was considered yesterday by the Waste Lands Committee, and will, 1 hear, be reported to the House practically unaltered in its provisions. Owing to the poorness of the land immediately adjacent to the Mansion House, it is proposed to sell 5000 acres or more to the purchaser of the House. Probably the present occupant, Mr Campbell, will be the purchaser, as he already owns a considerable area of land in tho yicinity of the estate. This is one of the few Bills that the Government will make an effort to push through.
