Wellington, Saturday. vV>e Long, tho Chinaman charged with stabbing Matthews, in his ovidenco showed that the accused had been assaulted, kicked in the f«ce, and badly handled, and then took out his knife, but nude no attempt to use it till Matthews rushed at and struck him, It also appears that he might have inflicted theivound (which is not a serious'one) in stumbling forward. The Pi.M. dismissed the oharge and said he would not order Matthews to b3 prosecuted for perjury, but asked the Inspector to look carefully through his evidence which was flatly contradicted by independent witnesses.
