FOOTBALL.

[By Dauooles.] Stars ut, Pahiatua. The junior teams of tho above Clubs met on,, the Oval on Saturday last, and an interesting game resulted in a diih°jheither side scoring. The home fifteen were the favourites, but the Bush put a strong team in the Bold, and were quite equal, and in. some respects superior to our boy?, The game was far from a brilliant exposition, the state of the ground being no doubt the cause, but at times some pretty individual play was shown, The visitors' baoks proved a plucky . and reliable lot, and the usual passing rashes of the Stars were, conspicuous by their absence. Cameron was undoubtedly the mainstay lor Pahiatua, and played about the best game on the ground. Baillie, Vile and Criohton also played with a great amount of energy, and in fact all the backs were conspioaous atone time or another by good individual play, Of the forwards, Pellim;, "'per, and Lewis were among the best. The Stars played a poor game, and seemed to fancy the result of the game as a moral. Their passing was weak, and forward ;Jay generally disorganised. Their fast baoks were in the raster unemployed, and if they bad been- given more work to do the result would have been different. Galloway was the best of tho backs, and was fit enough for a lot more work, ('twill ran and passed exceedingly well, and wus several times within an ace of scoring. T, Wrigley shone in the forwards, Bnd does a lion's share of work on tho line out, Pearso and Pike played well in the loose and strums, and the "following up " Dorsoia were always to tho front. Mr C. A, Pownall aoted as referee, and Messrs Hudson and Pickering as lino umpires. The visitors were sent away by the evening train, with their pretty banner flying, and all in excellent spirits,

The Oriental second inflicted n severe beating on the boys of Opaki on Saturday, winning by 18 points to ml.

The Whareama team arrived in Masterton to-day, They play their opening match of tbo tour at Greytown to-morrow. The Carterton learn will compete with the Bed Star second on the Oval on Saturday next, in the junior oup contest, The following will re. present the Stars: —Wrigley, Jacksou, Hawke, Galloway, King, Cargill, Cotter,Pe»rse,Dorßet(2), T, Wrigley, Fike, Westbrook, Wellington, Rosa. Emergencies-Green, Fellingham, hockley, Stono, The Carterton team will be the strongest they have yet placed in^e.field, and will include Bach vße'rana as Tyler,Eagle, Froeth, and others. The Stars will have to go in for trainiug, if they mean to keep np tbeir reputation. The Observer, referring to the non-appearance of tho Carterton team to play the arranged match with the Orientals on Thursday last remarks: —" There is certainly no excuse for the Cartertonians, and their conduot was the reverse of sportsmanlike," H. Wrigley, the bright little fullback of the Bed Star second fifteen, and emergency man for the first,'has played no less than nineteen football matches this season. This About takes the record for the Wairarapa.

" Baby" Wilson, who played in several matches full buck of the New Zealand rep. team in Australia, \m been transferred from Wellington to Feilding, The original team to represent Wanganui in their Wairarapa tour has been considerably altered, and will consist of the following players: -P. Mbbod, Pnraell, E. Peake, Bea» ger, Ferguson, H. Bouthoombe, Hunter, Burl-J. Bimms, W. i'ownull, Ridler, B. McLean, W. Harrieou, Riddell, Byrnes, J, and D. Blair, and J, Emerson, The Yeoman, in reference to the team, has the following;— The reason or reasons for so many of our "footballers" drop* ping out at the last moment is most severely commented on. Sickness, of course, no one can help, but when paltry excuses are given, it is lime a note was taken of those players, and remembered when some other occasioa suggests their inolusion in a Wanganui team. It is now arranged that the team leave Wanganui about this day fortnight, and those Unions with whom matches had been arranged have been apprised of the alteration. It is, hopedMthe honour of the town, and partilmWy for the of those ohosen to represent the local Union, that the team now chosen will stick 'flWyio practice.

An old New Zealander, writing to a friend in Wellington, about the list match between New Zealand and New South Wales, says:—The new men of the New Zealand team—tho avenging angels turned out four real "09 carders." Beyond all question Oliphant is tho beat wing forward I ever *aw. But the superior daisy of them all was Watson, flow ho ran, kicked, and shone ia the scrum is too long ut talc forme to tell, tut he whipped everything in tho shape of forward play. Gray is also a ringor, and bis tigerish dashes out of tho scrum, and on to the man who had the ball were a treat 10 see, And D'Aroy, my boy, you should havo beeD there to hear the crowd cheer, You may take your protty lit-le punter, and give me the big sturdy nun who plays the devil's own game. Listen I Once the N.S.W, men ran the ball down to New Zealand's ?.s's, where D'Arcy relumed with a magnificent kick, and following up, came through like«cannon ball, snatched the ball from the midst of a crowd o? men, and went for the Blue line, Ho ran like a deer, scattering his opponents right and left, breasting and beating all opposition witu such glorious pluck, and pacing it so splendidly, that a great roar of cheers went up from the hostile crowd; Just on tho line he was tackled by Cobb, and rather than risk losing the Bcore, he passed to Lambie, who scored tho try."

Tho representative trial match at Wellington on Saturday proved a fiasco. The majority of the players sooted to take part in tbo trial failed to put in an appearance, The opposing teams consisted of only eleven players aside, andfi team won by G points to nil. Pringle, A. Campbell and W. McKen?io scored tiies,
