FOOTBALL.
J [By Damocles,] When the news arrived' in Master--8 ton on Saturday evening that the New " Zealand team had gained 'a decisive victory over the Now South Wales veterans by sixteen points to nil, considerable excitement prevailed, and the various windows in which the result appeared, were patronised by orowds of enthusiasts. It was indeed welcome news, and the team by winning this final match, have faiths , fully uphold the football reputation of * the Colony. From the latest reports in the Sydney papers, nearly ev9ry writer expressed the opinion thc-t New South Wales would again Bhoitaheir superiority on Saturday, and could easily defeat the best fifteen New Zealand could place in tbe field, Tbe following are the teams that were chosen for the great struggle for supremacy, and it will be seen that j. the four men nominated by the Wairarapa Union, had a say in the glorious victory:— New South Wales— Full-back, e Cobb; three-quarters, Roberts, Abbott, Surtnan j halves, Barrie, Gal', loway; forwards,- Honlon, Fraser, [ Scott, Sawyer, Veecb, Alcock, Allj port, Huddlestone. M'ilurdo. j New Zealand -Full-back, D'Aroy; three - quarters, Gage, Wynyard, r Jervis; babes, Bayl^yjiutland; forwards, Hiroa, LambifvUfKenzie (2), Gray, Murray, Watson, Coekroft, 5 Oliphant, } Wairarapa should be proud of the , result of the match, as they had more , representatives engaged in it than s any other Union in the Colony. Wellington and Auckland were each re- ( presented ty three, Taranaki two, and I Bawke's Bay, Manawatu, and West | Coas't one each. ■ The New Zealand team have now , concluded the Australian tour, having J played ten matches, winning nine, and I losing one. They have scored 188 | points against 44, This iB a splendid ( record. | The team is expected in | Wellington on Thursday next, and arrangement are now being made to give them a grand reception, and : they certainly deserve one. The rep. practice, proposed to be held in Masterton on StojJav last, | turned out a regular fialco, and out of thirty players choson to compose A and B teams, not half of that number rolled up. It is a great pity this Bhould have been the case, but it can easily be accounted for, • Yery few of the players interested knew who were in the teams, only one paper in the district being supplied with; the names by the Selection Committee, , and therefore the matter did not receive sufficient publioity. 1 hope • next Saturday's final rep. practice, to be held;at Carterton, will have a better result. : Only three players from were present on Saturday, llfttnely, W eloli, Hwlje and Ma^uire f ,
and the latter is the only o;io who ia fit (or a representative team. Several junior players were on the ground, and a very ordinary scratch game wis played, Tho Selection Committee (Messis Malcolm, Wilsonoand Maguiro) wero piesent, and after the ganio, picked tho following teams of Frob'ables and Possibles to play at Carterton next Saturday Probables —fl. Udy, De Joux, Hudson, It. Thompson, Hansen, Alaguire, Moms, T. Welch, Romeni, E. Udy, Pearse, A, Welch, D, Udy, W, Day, G, Wolcb. Possibles—Wriglry, Baratow, Hy.,j land, McCarthy, Knowles, Booth, G. ' ® ri 4j3srowood,Rd(l,Aßt«ll, Caffidron, MoKillop, Jackson, Olliver, 1. pray, H. Welch, Moore. Emergencies—F. Hawke, T. Thompson, Simeon. " It would be unfair to criticiso the team chosen, as it will be altered , considerably before tho match against Wangunui, but loaunot understand { why " Jimmy" Owen, Agnow, Fulk- \ ' ner, Wilsono, and others have not ' been inoluded in tlie teams, Of course, D'Arcjrfljtoy and Watson will make a voat improvement in tho final selection, and I see no reason why, if jealousy and favouritism can be omitted, tho Wairarapa reps, should not regain their lost laurels in the football field, and come to tliu front as one of the best teams in the Colony. One of the most interesting junior games of the season will he played on the Park Ov&l on Saturday next, when the second teams of the Red Stirs and Greytown meet, These aio among the best intho junior round, and the victors of this match will ' have a big tay in the possession of the cup. A great Dumber of uptciaiors may be expected. The aims will be represented ss follows • —Wiigloy, Galloway, Green, Jackson, Goiter, L'argill, King, Pike, Dorset (2), Wesibrook, Wrigley, Wellington, Hockley, Fellingham, Emergencies —Stone, Renall, Allen, Donovan (2). family r.ro to play tho 'Athletics at Peloao on Arbor Day, August 4th. Tho return junior cup match between the Star second and Fea i hers ton, was played at Carterton on Saturday last, and resulted in a win for the former by two points to nil, Tho ground wasin very good order, although rain fell through the aatno. Galloway scored the try for tho winners, after a dodgy run ; Wrigley failed to convert. The Featheraton team played a dashing game, from start to finish, and it was only iho good combination of the Stars, that kept Featherston from scoring. The most conspicuous playera lor the Stais were, Galloway and . H. Wrigley (backs), and Wellington and Piko forwards). The pick of the Featherston team were, McCarthy and tiyland (backs,) Spackman and Hyland (forwards). Mr Booth made an impartial referee, Messrs A. Hoar and Eagle acting as line umpires. The match Eketahuna v. Woodville, . played at Eketahuna on Saturday last, resulted in a win for the home team by eight points (tour tries) to two points, The ground was iu a terrible condition and heavy rain fell all through the match. Notwithstanding this, the attendance was large, A match between the Pahiatua and Tutaekara teams was played at Hawcra oa Saturday last, resulting in a win for the former by a potted goal _ Comments on tiie tour. Bayly, Lambie, Cookroft and Murray are the only four playors in the N,Z, team who have taken part in every match, Bayly, however, only played in tho second spoil against tho Queensland eighteen, taking the place of Harper, who was injured. Jervis scored thirty-three points, but this includes six place kicks. He potted three goals, and scored three tries, so that, apart from the place kicks, he scored 20 points, (only three points being allowed for his dropped goal against Queensland). Bayly was the principal try getter, scoring six tries. He albo potted a goal. In all he scored 22 points. Wynyard and Lambie scored four tries each, W, McKenzie and Butland three each, Elliston, Gray, Gage, and Shannon two eaoh, and Murray, Speight, Olipbant and Oookroft one, Harpor potted 2 goals, Gf the individual players it would appear that Jervis, the brilliant Auoklander,Bayly and Wynyard (who has shown something like the real form in the latter matches) have proved themselves the best of the three-quarters. Gage, too, has rendered good service as a three-quar-ter, but in the earlier matches be played -ifalf. The kicking of tho quartette, particularly that of Jervis, has been excellent. Harper played well in the four matches in which he took part, but Good has not been a success. Butland, who will return to New Zealand as one of the best halves in the Colony, is undoubtedly one of the stars of the team, He has shown up brilliantly in overy match, The "West Coast have gone into raptures over their representative's play, and bis reception on his return hotne, from ' allnccounts, will be a most enthuain; aetic one, He fully deserves it, flerrold, on his reputation, was the best half in the team when they left New Zealand, but unfortunately he in the first game, bad no opportunity of upholding his reputation. Shannon proved himself a real good man in the few matches in which he took part. Wilson did well at first, but bis reputation suffered considerably by bis complete failure in the second match agaiußt New S.>uth Wales. D'Arcy his been a success. • He has dono well both ?s a forward and at full-baok, and according to the report of Saturday's match his play in the latter position was of a very high order, in fact, quite up to his bsst form, Coming lo the forwards, Lambie stands out as ono of the heroes of the tour, and next to him comes tho veteran Cookroft, Hiroa end Mroflvior consistent all-round playTjlcETiie, the wing player, has played brilliantly, but en apparently unconquerable disposition to get on the wrong side of the ball has marred his display. Ellison wa3 always prominent in the matches in which he has played, and he has proved that the Committe made no mistake inserting him as a forward. Unfortunately be was unable through injuries to take part in all the games, Several of the others also did well at ' ■ times, particularlyStuartandMowleui. The four new men—R, McKenzie, Watson, Gray and Olipbant—have ■ been highly successful, and it is a pity that they did not have more opportunities of showing what they were made of, Perhaps the Selection Committee will know bettor nexl ' time. 1:... From a private letter we learn thai tho proposal made by the secretary V. of the New Zealand Rugby Vmon
s through Mr G, Campbell, manager' of 1 the New Zealand team, for the forma- , tionofan Australasian Union,! has e been favourably received in Australia, • The proposal, is th#t the Unionshould 1 consist of the Now South Wales, New e Zealand and Victorian Rugby Unions, if and that visits should be made by t eaoh union once every four years, s Under this arrangement New Zealand , would bo visited by an Australian i, team for three -years in succession , and every fourth year a New Zealand . team would visit Australia,—N.Z.
