CORRESPONDENCE.

9 . Water and Drainage Scheme. f [To the Editor W. D, Times,] Sir.—The Borough Council has at last done the right tiling and all ratepayers who have any regard for their pocket, or their lives, will heartily approve of the Council's action. Everyone must recognise that for years past we have been steadily building up for the future a complete hot-bed of fever, and that going on at tbe present rate, it cannot bo long before Masterton becomes the most unhealthy .town in the Colony. Day by day the sewage is draining into our subsoil; causing it to become thoroughly saturated with poisonous matter, which is slowly but steadily finding its way into tbo atmosphere above, This cannot continue without the efleots being very seriously felt, and it is the duty of the ratepayers to strengthen the hands of the Counoil in the work wliioh it has commenced, The Mayor spoke truly when lie said that if" the ratepayers vetoed- tbe proposal the matter would rest, en- , tirely with them," Lettho ratepayers [ bear this in mind when the proposal is I submitted to them, and let them aek 1 themselves whether they prefer bay ' ing sickness and high insurance premiums, or health and cloanliness with low premiums. Itis to be hoped that the Council-if the proposal is submitted to the ratepayers—will formulate a clear and feasible scheme; one that shows on the face of it, acknowledge and consideration of the subject. £15,000 or £20,000 as the case may be—should not be carelessly or thoughtlessly expended, but tho best advice that can be obtained should be forthcoming before the .scheme is given effect to. In the meantime, however, would it be too much to ask our civic fathers . to have the Queen-street water (save' the term !) channels cleaned out—unless itis feared that tho disturbance , of the filth, with which they are tilled, will release the f'evor germs and permit them to circulate in the air above I I am, etc., r Wm. G. Beard, . J
