He did not wish to disappoint , : those present who had-not received ' circulars, and was glad to see them there, provided they did not take any , active part in the proceedings The meeting had been called to choose a , candidate to represent tho Liberals in tbe district, and to oppose tbe present nvmber (Mr W, 0. Buchanan.) | Having made these few remarks he would ask that the meeting appoint ; its chairman, : . Mr W. Udy was proposed and 1 seconded, but declined to act, as he ' had understood that the meeting was to be a private one. He considered 1 that the person who had advertised a 1 publio meeting was a mean and con- ' temptable man, .He did not care who he was or where he came from. I Mr Udy was asked to reconsider f his decision, but decliued and said he t would propose Mr W. F.
