PAHIATUA NOTES.
(By an Occasional Correspondent,) A meeting of tho Pahiatua Chess and Draughts Club Committee was held injjje Club Room on Wednesday jtfting, 19th inst. Present— (chair), Turner, and Beaufort. A letter was received from Mr Godstohalk tendering his resigns'. • tioti as Secretary to the Club. Tho resignation was accepted wiih regret. It was resolved to commence the final round of the Chess Championship Tournampnt between Messrs Norton anil Godstchnlk, on Tuesday, 25th inst., also the draughts contest between Messrs Vile and fladford, Resolved that Mr Godstchalk be asked to procure trophies for the above tournaments, Mr McCrea was appointed Secretary in Mr Godstelmlk's place. New members were eleoted as follows; —Messrs Hdett, Morluy and Dash. It was moved by Mr Tumor and seconded by Mr Beaufort that a hearty vote of thanks be given lo Mr Godstchalk for past services in connection with she Club. This was curried unanimously, and a vote of thanks to the chair concluded the business, Mr Rutherford from Feildingis Mr at the Bank of New Zealand here. Mr Pringle's saddlery shop was broken into on Wednesday night, but the burglar had to go away it wiser if , not s„sndder mau, as there was nothing " 'i hjs line" in the shop, he being evidently after cash, and finding none, left everything else alone. No arrest has been made so fur, We havo a " Bachelors' Show " in Pahiatua now, and people passing the house on Wednesday morning were considerably surprised to seo a big gate leaning up against the front door, supported by sundry logs,' planks, polo 9, otc, the bouse having by the look of things stood a , rather formidable seigo. I have not ' been able to find out yet who the besieging party were. , Great Scott! Another lawy?r is coming 1 When will tbey cease ? The fame of Pahiatua as a lawyer's paradise has evidently gone far and wide " O'er mountain, stream, and sea.". Only fancy, five lawyers in a place like Pahiatua. We are to bo pitied right mough, AMr Coates, of Wellington, is tho gentleman who is opening a branch of his business hero, under the management of Mr Lucas, j Our local chemist, Mr Bidd, is ' leaving us in a few weeks, having decided to take a trip to the Old Country, Wo wi'bli Mr Bidd a safe and phmsant trip. " Opposition is the soul of trade. 1 ! Is that right, Mr Editor? Atanyrate we're going in for opposition at Pahiatua. Another watchmaker has started in the main street, and has a bright display of watches, jewellery, etc, in the window—also wedding rings—a chance for all je youths of Pahiatua. That reminds me, Mr Editor of how seldom we have a marriage here. I wonder why that is; No doubt the weather "damps" their ardour,
