A. cobkespondence in another column shows that ample power exists under the by-laws of the Masterton Borough Council to suppress houses of ill fime. We believe that the Masterton police have not been aware of this provision or they would lwo acted upon it. It is also evident that the most proper person to enforce obedience to tbe bylaws is the Inspector of the Borough, Still it is unlikely that this officer would take active steps to enforce a by-law which Las hitherto remained in abeyance without some expression of opinion from the Council itself, more especially as (here is reason to believe that there might be influential opposition within that body to hie . taking such a course. The Borough Councilisrespotisiblefortheby lawand for its enforcement, and- the proper course would probably be for it to give a direct instruction to its Inspector lo act upon it. Failing this, the police or any private person could take effeo'ive proceedings under the clause, That some proceedings must be taken, aud will be taken, may bo regarded as ; a certainty, Public opinion, as manifested in our correspondence column, and gleaned from all quarters of the town, demand the suppression of a glaring social ulcer which is a scandal and a disgrace to Mast rton, We havo been gl«d to receive assurances from 1 the headß of tho Episcopalian, Presbyterian, and Wesleyan Churches in this town, that they will not rest till the notorious breach of public morality, which we have sufficiently indicated, is effi'Qtually suppressed. - : , ; j
