Yesterday was an eventful day in the House of Representatives. As the outcome of the Cadman-Rees esse, Mr Oadman challenged Mr Rees to him, and contest Auckland City or the Thames seat. The announcement caused a sensation, members loudly applauding Mr Cadman, and renewing their applause when Mr Rees promptly accepted the challenge, choosing the Auckland City seat, A long, and at times bitter, BTOrlc ensued, the document signed by the two members resigning their seats being meanwhile held by the Clerk of the house. The Speaker ruled that until it was in bis hands be had no official knowledge of the resignation of Messrs Cadman and Rees. This gave rise to considerable | speculation as to whether the Clerk I bad the power to delay the document even though asked by members to do eo; and such was the uncertainty on the point that when the debate was resumed in the evening, Mr Cadman, qq the ground that bo was not s
mombor, did not return to tlio Houso Mr Heei however, kept his place until the discussion closed, about midnight, and then left tbu Chamber. During thedebale Mr W. 0. Smith in a long speech, denounced Mr Rees for his action in this o»se, and his past transactions in Native lands, at tho ond of the disouasion, the Speaker received (ho joint resignation mid declared tho eems for Auckland City and the Thumes vncam. Tho financial dehato was commonced by Air Fislior, who spolio to a bare quorum for abiut an hour. The Legislative Council did very litto bueinovs, owing to tho indisposition of tlio Colonial Secretary. The Hon R. Olliver presented a petition Binned by 25,469 women above tlio age of 21 year! praying that the franchise might bo granted to women, and that it might be granted in time to allow thorn to exercise it at the goneral election,—lf.Z,Times.
