PAHIATUA NOTES.

; _ The weather, the all absorbing topic i in Pablatua of late, has been particularly ■ boisterious. During Wednesday niqht i no less than 2'15 inches of rain fell, and as a consequence tho wholo of the rivers 1 and creeks in tho district are in high flood, all the low lying country inundated, the flood being very little short of the floods, In fact the Mangaramarama has not been so high for years, and has caused a great deal of damage to the small strugglingsettlerß in the settlement beyond.Pahlatua, washing away their crops, gardens and fences, The County roads haye also suffered considerably, the metal being washed awav, and in some oasesowing to logs blocking up the oulvorts the flood wnhed out large gaps in the road. Large slips are reported on the Central and Toritea roads and a small mountain came down in the Mangaone Valley, which will tab somo time to remove, It is estimated that the ropun will cost the County some £2OO or £3OO. Large dips are also reported in tho Makuri d'stnet. Despite the fearfully inclement state of the weather on WJneaday evening Stewart's Hall was fairly well filled on the occasion of the re-appeutance of the Pahiatna Amateur Dramatic Club, who again placed the Trial by Jury on the Boards and acquitted themselves very creditably. The Colorado Beetles, on their first appearance met with agoed reception. introduced in the discussion re the Bite lor the Mangatainoka bridge. Plans trom the Engineer were submitted and several members were appointed to dis- . cuss the matter with the Engineer, It was also decided to ask the Government 1 for a subsidy towards the cost of its erection. The Council are to be commended for the': action in voting £ls to the library funds for the purchase of books. The library at present having a very limited coUection. lhe new office bult for the Herald newspaper are completed, and are very commod'ous and conveniently planned. The plant w.'i moved into the building on Tucday last. Pahiatua has rccoiv J an addition to the legal fraternity in the person of Mr Hrlett, who hn taken rooma oyer' Crewe's Mart.
