AUSTRIAN LABOUR.
The Gumfields Commission. (By Telegrapb.-Press Association). Auckland, Thursday. At tbe Gurafields. Cdmmisssion evidence was given that the Austrians make good settlers, and were mostly young men, and therefore their average gains were greater than Britishers, who had a percentage of old men, One Austrian eurncd £4 19s weekly for twelve moolhs, another £2 18s 6(1; one British dinger £5 10s Cd and some others £3 12s and £3 9s 6d. There were between 400 and 600 Austrians on the fields, including 100 under 16 years of age, Ono witness declared that a great number of Austrians were sorry they had come, Eight had gone home a fortnight ago, their friends having subscribed tbeir passage money.
