A sensational bolt occurred in Queen' street about four o'clock yesterday afternoon, when a waggon and five horses were seen dashing at a headlong pace from the Upper Plain road. Whon they reached Kingdon's corner they collided with the verandah posts, smashing eveiy thing before them. The Wanganui Herald slates that a man was found on Thursday in a dying condition on tho side of the road between HuntervilleandSilverhope, and close by him a hat full of water, a lot of burnt paper, and the covers of a pocket-book, and some time afterwards part of a lunch and a sealed cork, and close by an almost empty stryohnino bottle, the cork found previously belonging to tho bottle. The dootor was sent for, and arrived promptly, but the man breathed his last a few minutes afterwards. At the inquest held on the body at the Argylo Hotel, Huntorvillo, the evidence went to show that deceased poisoned himself while of unsound mind, and a verdict to that effect was returned by tho jury. It is generally thought that the poison (strychnine) must have been brought from Melbourne, he having been only seven weeks in the colony;

Madame Antoinette Sterling, the famous contralto, who is now on a tour to the colonies, opens her season in Wellington on Monday next, 3rd July, in the Opera Houso. Madame Sterling waß born about 1850 at Sterlingville, in the State of New York, and is Baid to be able to traoe her descent to William Bradford; one of the original Pilgrim Fathers, who orossed in tho " Mayflower." She very early developed a voice of extraordinary compass and great richness and volume, her range extending from the low E flat to tho soprano F, or a little ovor two octaves,- Sho studied with Madame Marches! at Cologne, Pauline Viardot at Baden, and finally with Garcia in London. Returning to America in 1871, she speedily won for herself a high place as a conoort singer, but two yoars later she took up her residence in London, whore Bhe is well known and widoly popular Though tho has often sung with success in oratorio, and hor repertoire embraces many of tho masterpieces of German song, it is as a ballad singer that her re-, putation has boon acquired, and it is moat likely in this character that wo shall principally know her hern. She will bo assisted in her New Zealand tour by Miss Isabol Webster, Mr James Wood, and Mr Holder, a South Australian vocalist, and there is little loar but that her magnificent voioo and her attractive style of Binging will ensure her an amount of patronagecommensurato with hor talents.
