INQUEST AT CARTERTON.
A inquest into the circumstances 'attending the death of Andrew Do Lacey, was held yesterday, before Mr T, Hutchison, Coroner, and a jury of Bix (oydijch Mr G. W, Deller was ohosproreman.) After viewing the body the following evidence was taken. Joseph Waghorn apposed that he was working at the sawmill where tbe accident occurred. Knew the deceased and was working with him on Saturday last. Saw him immediately before the accident occurred, He was Working at the logthelast time witness taw Do Lacoy alive. He was carrying chains across to tho mill for (he timber trucks. Wm. Jones deposed that he was the tailer-outat the mill, Ho know tho deceased, he was working at tho mill on Saturday last. Saw him come into the mill with the trucks. Was expecting deceased to bring a letter. Saw him come into the mill under the belts. The engine was woffygwt the lime, Noticed that deceased carried somo horse gear, consisting of "chains and a spreader. Was carrying the chains across bis Bhoulders and the spreader upright in his hand, He camo under tbe belt in that way, Noticed him stooping his head but he did not lower tho spreader. Before witness could shout out the hook in the spreader had caught in the bolting, the chains rattled and the deceased fell on his face, The chains were carried round with the belting, Witness rushed out of the mill as he could not I tell where tbe chains might fly, The engine was going at full speed. Called out to stop tbe mill at once, for had no doubt but what the man was kilh>d Saw one of the men turn ihe deceased over, and then, ran away for tuedootor.
Heard tho man say that De Lacoy was dead. Assisted to convey the body of the deceasod to his own house, Had seen tho body sinoe, and identified it os being the body of Andrew Do Lacey. The hook which caught in the belting tore off about ten feet of it, but it had since been repaired, Two of the belts aro fenced but theso two are not fenced. Had frequently seen mon go under the belting, but they woro not obliged to do so. Dr Dickson deposed: I was called on Saturday last to Mr Booth's sawmill, I was told a man had been killed. I went and found the deceased dead. I made an examination of tho hotly. It was about 8 p.m. I found a contused wound on the forehead and temple on tho left bide, and also a ft auture of tho skull on the left side, Tliero hud been a considerable liommoirhoge, I' consider that death whs caused by the injury to the brain, 1 made inpries how tho accident oconrred, aud Irom information received, I should say that death resulted from the deceased being dashed violently against some very hard substance, 1 should say that death must have boon almost instantaneous. This being the whole of the evidence tho jury retired. On returning tho following verdict was given: That the death of Andrew Do Lacy was purely accidental, and the jury would reI'ounncnd that the belting bo fenced. Mr Aclicson watched the ease on behalf of tho widow and family.
