[BY DAMOCLES.]

M Stars ut. Greyiown,.

The first senior cup match of the season was played at 1 Greytown on Saturday, and resulted in a well daserved victory for the Stars by fife points to three. The Stars were without the services of Hudson, Bobinson, and Walter Welch, while Greytown wero weakened by the loss of McKenzie, Tato and Maguire., so that the teams were equal as far »s emergencies wero concerned. Mr Syd. Nieholls was chosen referee and Messrs Thomas and Tally line umpires. .''."•' The tennis as they entered' tho field were composed as follows :-6reytown—A, Udy, Fullmer, Hawkins, Jackson, H. Udy, Hawke, E. and' D. Udy, Mitchell, Connolly, Welch, Tuboro, Cand J. Beard, and Amps. Stars—Wrigley, Cochrane, Bennll, Galloway, Dp Jonx, Hansen, Yennell, Een)ini,'MoKillbpl Welohj lggiiltieu, Morris, Wilsone, and Kutnmer. The Stars played fourteen men in thefirst spell, when Butement joined their ranks.

The Stars kicked off with the sun in their eyes, and a stiff breeze against them. Almost immediately after the start, the Stars forwards had the ball before them, and sailing away wards the Greytown goal line. From the forwards the "backs got a show, and clever passing between Cochrane and De Joux, enabled the latter to dodge through the opposing backs, and score a try near the corner. Wrigley, by a well-judged kick from a difficult angle, increased tho score to five points. Greytown then assumed the aggressive, and tho play for a considerable time was stationed close upon the Star goal line, where tho excellent defensive, play of the Star backs was seen to advantage. Several times a scoro seemed inevitable, but the splendid efforts of the Greytown forwards were not crowned with success, For a. breach of the rules on the part of the Stars, Greytown obtained a free kick, and Hawke fully utilised the golden opportunity, and placed the ball, be'tween the posts, amidst great excitement, The Stars now rallied, and had tho play out of immediate danger the rest'of iho spell, The second half was infinitely more evenly contested, and the Stars by fast open play made the game Yery interesting. Neither tram bad any distinct advantage in this spell, the ball in* vading both quarters, and for the main was relegated in neutral territory. No6core was obtained in this spell, not for the want of trying, for both teams played their utmost, and when the whistle ended the game, the spectators were thoroughly satisfiSd with the result of the game, after witnessing a well-contested and thoroughly good-ttmpertd exposition of football.

For the winners, the forwards played «ell to a man, and were quite equal to their heavy opponents in acruramago as well as in the loose, The backs I have never seen to better advantage, the passing, running and. collaring at times being brilliant, Wtigley.as full, was the lion of his team, and played in that cool and consistent manner fur which, he is noted. Cochrane, Renall and Galloway, as thrco-quarters, had a lot of work to do, and played faultlessly. The halves, Hansen, Vennell, and De Jottx were also in splendid form, the latter being'particularly brilliant,

The Greytown forwards were far heavier than the Stars, and including some of their old warriors, viz,, Mitchell, 0. Beard and Amos, who strengthened the team wonderfully, The rest of the forwards played their usual splendid game, and it was very hardluck they did not score on several occasions. In the backs, llawke played a olever half-back game, his smart punting being quite a feature, and proving a great help to his team when in tightened circumstances. Pnlkner played a good-leoipered game, running and kicking in splendid style, He is without doubt onoof tbe best backs we have in the Wairarapa, and for good all-round play I think he tnlio3 the palm, Jackson and Hawkins also put in somo useful work, and the other backs were seen attheirbest. .

Iggulden, one of the most consistent and hard-working forwards in the Red Star 'jSlub, leaves shortly ■> for Eketabuna, and will not'only be greatly missed by his team,'but by Wairarapal footballere generally, Ho has been with the Star Club for years, and it is certainly through his indomitable perseverance that the Stars have attained the proficiency they nov? holq\ I understand Iggulden wijl not sever his'connection with his old plub, put wiil conie down to any big contest, should they require his services;, -' :

The second Stars played all-comers pp the (jyal on Saturday, and an exppjlent practice was held. The allpomers composed about twenty of the Mtstaiton Club, so that.the result pf the gijne wasneveriii jjujtjje' plucky Stirs made things very, merry for their experienced opponents,
