Wairarapa Daily Times. [ESTBLISHED 1878.] WEDNESDY, MAY 17, 1893.

SECOND EDITION

Mit;W. Lowes, the Chairman of the Masterton .Trust Lands, is a man of business, aud it follows as a matter of course ,;that... the affairs of the Trust aVioaldr'be ;.in good order and its administration satisfactory. No doubt appreciated the compliments paid to bim and to bis fellow trustees-at; the annual meeting on Monday;last, but the main satisfaction to a man of bis calibre would bo that the position of tbe Trust bad been.improved by bis efforts and that be was ablo to put before tbe public a balance sheet to which no reasonable exception could bo takan, Tho Trust has now an annual income of four hundred pounds, and this will be sbortly augmented. Money will be available for new expenditure, and upparently two objects for absorbing it ■ aro "already under consideration, One is a town ball, a thing (bat we can do without, but if public sentiment does call upon tbe Trust to erect -ono we can only bope that a substantial brick etruoturo will be tbe result and not a galvanised iron shed. We have sufficient structures of the latter character already in the town. Another suggestion is a scholarship, and to this no objection can bo taken if the money cannot be applied to a better purpose. Wo would, however, sooner see the resources of tbe Trust devoted to 1 big educational effort, one that would not be confined to a single lad, but which would materially help forty or fifty. Wo have before pointed out that'a school of agriculture is wanted in Masterton, that boys when they leave school have frequently no opening before them other than a position in a shop. If lads cotild bo properly trained in horticulture and agriculture they would have a far better chance of doing well in the world and becoming useful members of the community, There are already too many distributors and too few producers amongst us, and it is a pity, to see scores of fine lads joining the overrecruited army of distributors instead of being trained to become producers. Wages for boysin this townhave fallen by about twenty-five per cent, daring tho paßt ten years from this cauße. Boys are a drug in the market, but if they were trained to earn »living from land, there could not be too many of them. We still hope that the Town Lands Trustees will let tho Town Hall rest for a generation, and paßs even the scholarship; 10 that

thoy may go in for a big thing and open up a School for Horticulture and Agriculture on, say, their forty acre reserve at the Upper Plain. *
