FOOTBALL.

[By Damocles.] Masteitonv, Stars,

The first cup match of the season was played in Masterton on Saturday, wheu tho Masterton and Star second fifteens mot to contest for the junior championship. The Master ton team was composed, with three exceptions, of Maories, and when tbey appeared on the ground, the game seemed a "moral" for thera, as the Starslooked extremely small in comparison, But weight is not everything in the football field now, aud the young Stars carried off a popular victory by seven points lo five.

A largo number of spectators were present, and appeared to t«ke an intense interest in the result of the gauie. Some of the uuwortliy tactics usually practised by the Nativesespecitilly when they are pitted against the Stars—were again witnessed, and had it not been for tho prompt manner in which the referee threatened one ov two of tho roughest players, the game would undoubtedly have assumed a lively finish. Messrs Jeffries and Harry Wriglay captained tho Musterlon and Star teams respectively, Mr W. 0. Cargill acted as referee, and Messrs Qounslow and Hudson umpires.

In the first spell, Wellington scored the only try for the Stars alter a splendid run, and soon After Master ton retaliated, W. Karaite, securing a try, and placing the goal, making them five to two. The second spell, however, saw Cottor gain the winning try, which was prettily converted by Wrigley. For. the winners there can be no hesitation in saying that Foster Wellington played a really brilliant forward game, aud if this young player does not make bis mark in Waijarapa football before many seasons are lam not a prophet of tha p nmoi Fred, Dorset, Cotter, and played well, and are all tj OUDg . UU3 with a future, before email though thoy Bty be, were in excellent trim, the, CO ol anil dashing play of Wriglfty aiui Galloway, especially calling for high praise from the spectators, Green and Hockley Were also Aery conspicuous by some good service.

_ The Masterton teamiwero certainly in very poor form, and alter the first few dashea several players lagged a lot, and left the hard work to be done by the few in form. Simeon, Mundy, and Eanganui appeared about the best in the forwards, aud W. Kariatiana, Barstow and Jumbo sbono among the backs, in fact, these three .players were tho best of their side, and put in aomo really useful and brilliant piay. Jeffries played the game, and in several instances collared and ran well.

Masterton ut, Greytom,

Shortly after this half timo was called. No scoring was done by either side during the second spell, but a very equal andbriakgame was played throughout, Watson skippered for tho visitors, and Tate for Greytown. Mr S, Nioholls acted as referee, and W. Thomas (Masterton) and Fred Hawlte (Greytown) as line umpires gave every satisfaction.

The Masterton team was muck the heavier of the two, but the winners were in lar better form, and were able to keep a severe pace throughout,

Watson, Gray, Malcolm, and rowler played a grand game for Masterton, whilst Leach, MoKenzie, Tate and Falkner, distinguished themselves for Greytown. The game was exceedingly rough throughout and at times fast and furious,

The notion of tho Woodville Football Club, at their meeting on Wednesday night, in decitliug that no player bo picked to represent it in Cup matches unless he is a financial member of the Club, is a step in tbe right direction. This subject has been thrashed out in the larger towns, where players transferred their allegiance from one Club to another so as to evade paying their and as a result SportsVjtfotsotion Sooiclies have been formed the objects of which are to allow no one to take part in any sport whatever, if one branch of sports reports snob a one at not having paid his subscriptions to it.

The Queensland Footballer and Cricketer has the following "Naturally footballers are greatly interested in the coining, visit of the Now Zealandere, So far as cun at present be gathered, no preparations ' have yet been made by the New Zealand Union in the diwo'ion. iof selecting, tho team lor the coming tour, However, we may tnke'it for granted that our friends know what tbey ara about, and we may rely that wo shell have to meet' foeiuon worthy of our steal,' when the qrcat matches tako place, Meanwhilf Jdfljtte land Bugby men in first-class trim, and make final arrangements as to date, eto,, as soon as possible."

A well-known English Rugby player, Mr l'\ H. B. Alderton, speaking at South Shields recently of the system of playing four three-quarter baoty said in the alteration of the style of play which had been brought about, thera naa now so much work thrown upon the centre man that he was run off his legs, and he hod to have another man in the centre to help him. He had played in tbe centre now for several years, and he found that eaoli year ho got more work, and could not do without th# aEsistnnce which the four three-quarter system supplied. They had a fair trial in the reoent North v. South match, When that match was over the man who had been playing for tho South began to orow, and say," i What abjut your four three-quarter system now?" Ho admitted that they wete beaten; but he did not think that solved the question as to whether four or three quarter backa wereibaiter, and told them thoy had better wail until they saw tho Weloh match, and ho thought most of them wero then inclined to think that tha four three-quarter system
