Several of the leading shots are also members of tbe Football Club. They will play Langdale on tbe 20th inst at Tenui.
Miss Caldwill and Mrs P, Groves lmve sent parcels of excellent fancy work to Miss Stilbom, Secretary of the Sewing Bee, to be disposed of at the comiDg bazaar in aid of the ball.
Messrs Maunsell Bros, have*generously headed a subscription list of one guinea for the purpose of defraying the cost of erecting a fence in front of the hall. The list is in the hands of Mr Lhwsou, manager of the Tenui branch ofthe W.F.O.A,
Belter late than never Tenui I I see a subscription list was opened some time ago at the store in aid of the Queensland Belief Fund, and about .£2O was contributed. I understand that tbe Relief Committee have intimated that they have sufficient subscribed. I should suggest that the amount available at the Btore be handed over to the Trustees of the Hall to reduce the debt on it, or to somo Charitable Society in Masterton or Wellington.
At the meeting of ratepayers held last Saturday, in the Boad Board Office, tiiere was a very fair attendance, Mr Mauasell, chairman of the Boad Hoard, read a report which showed a credit balance in favour of the Board. An explanation was given as to the unsatisfactory state of the roads, and, as usual, the heads blamed the tails, and the tails blamed the heads. It It would be a good thing for this district if nil the roads were under one body, either the County Council or lioad Board, "between the two stools we fall to the ground," aDd between these two bodies we cannot get justice. The sum of £l3O has been spent on the three main roads, £4O on the TinuiMasterton, £4O on the Tinui-Allred-ton, and Xsoon tbeTinui-Castlepoint, The whole amount might as well have been spent in trying to stem the tide j from entering the cave at the Castle, jfor what good has it done to the i roads. Borne of those present were ;in favour of localising the control of I the roads, as being less expensive, and 11hen all the roads would receive atI tendon, and the labour be better |distributed. It must, however, .be i admitted that the Boad Board and its f officers hare done their best to meet [exigencies under most trying circum'stances.
