Mr M. Max ton's Store and Residence Demolished.
Tho firebolls tolled nn alarm shortly after three o'clock this mora ■ ing. Tim ciiusl- wan found to to the burning of Mr M. Max ton's Htare and dwelling house in Mttin-st.,G-ruylown. Tho Fire Brigade were promptly on tho ocono, and ufter huihc time man - aged to got tho tiro under way, when the hose burst. A now hose was immediately pu'; od, but the fire bad get too strong a bold to save the building. Meanwhile most of the eontcuts of tho store wero removed on to the road, but no a|jstairs furei:nre oould bo saved owing to the dense smoke. Tho brigade, seoing that all efforts to save the burning building were futile, turned their ntteation to tho neighbouring ones, which they managed, by dint of batd and persevering lubor to buvb, Tho premises within an Jiour of tho first alarm were in ashes. The origin of the fire is a mystery. Mr \V. Harris, who was sleeping in tho buck, hearing » roar, got out of bed and opened the kitchen door. Tho smoke was so thick that ho hud to close tlio door Bgaia. Tbe servant, who was sleeping over the kitchen, had no time to save any of hor clothes, but rushed down in her nightdress. Fortunately, Mrs Maxton was in Carterton ; had stie been in her bedroom iher« ie no knowing hnw she could have escaped, as tbe Ktuoko filled the upstairs rooma in siioli a short time. The building and Stock were insured in the Viotoria Offico for £I2OO, but there was no insurance on the furniture, whioh was nearly all destroyed,
