For some years past the annual Hospital 801 l at Greytown bas been one of those great succ3sses which is only obtainable when all the members of a country community work together with hearty good-will. Some hostile criticism has recently appeared respecting its last gathering; but the allmions to it were so exaggerated and unneighbourly that they are better passed over in silence. It is easy enough to say nasty ill-natured things about any amateur re-union, but the contempt of right-minded people is unusually the punishment of the offender and this fairly meets Buch an offence. The Greytown Hospital Ball has been so successful that we hardly expect to see a Masterton Hospital Ball rival it, Tho circunh 1 stances oi the two Hospitals, however, are somewhat diflerent. The Grey- : town Hospital Trustees depend upon tho annual ball for a considerable slice of their income; the Masterton Hos- 1 pitsl Trustees, on the other band, find | that their ordinary subscriptions, ad- ; ministered prudently, are'' .sufficient for their requirements, It follows 1 that, whereas, the ball at Greytown : is an indispensable adjunct to the j Hospital Trustees; the one at Mas- < terton is only needed as a sort of side show. It appears that the j medical officers of the Masterton ( Hospital want to bring their surgiosl j instruments and medical apparati up to date, With proper professional 1 pride and laudable enthusiasm they ] desire considerable additions to their j scientific implements, and some of ) their friends intend to raise a special . fund for this purpose by means of a j hospital ball, Probably the splendid ] results of the Greytow a tells have < stimulated them to this enterprise ] and if our friends there areiriltated by
the unfriendly criticism to which we have referred, they may rememberrhat imitation is the eincerest form of flattery : and that eotue Maßterton peopk admire their methods to ■ 3uoh an extent that they propose to copy ftein. We are glad that the proposed Masterlon Ball is for a specific purpose, becnuse it is an honour to the Trustees at this end and to the subscribers to the institution, that for a number of years the institution has bean efficiently maintained without extraneous assistance. Wo have, no prejudice against a Hospital bill, for in Greytown all classes in iLe community have worked happily Dgtther to make thoir annual event a success, and the oftener people meet together in any community in such a spirit and with suoh a praiseworthy object in view the better it is for one and all.We doubt whether Masterton can rivalGreytown in this respect, because for years in the southern town they have been learning how to do the thing to advantage and Masterton will be only making a first attempt, Still we trust that an effort will ho made to run it on the Greytown lines. If so it cannot disappoint the expectations of its promoters.
