SECOND EDITION
If the Editor of the New Zealand Times had only enjoyed an experience which once (ell to our lot, y:a., for a year or bo to have been actually engaged in the heroic work of felling bush and clearing It, he would scarcely write in the following strain : ,
The strongest and mast capable men wham nobody would hire, mill be added to tbe ranis of the independent producers of New Zealand; and many workers, instead of fighting with their fellows for a share in the existing traces fund, will be digging a handsome subsistence for themselves from the soil. The plan of operations Is simplicity itself, as the description published in these column yesterday abundantly testified. AU that a man has to do is to become a proprietor—a perpetual leaseholder is a proprietor—will So to earn his wages and save enough out of them to etool his farm and house himself upon it.
Id the first place it is all nonsense to talk about " the strongest and most capable men whom nobody would hire." Why these are the very men for whom there is a constant demand all over the Colony—the very men that are unobtainable I Everybody knows how hard it is to obtain the services of a strong capable man, and that as sooa as suob sons makes bis appearance be is snapped up as a bargain. It wants no labour bureau to find work for strong capable men, and it is a libel on New Zealand to assume that such wen require to be spoon-fed by the Government. However, the point to which we would draw the attention of oiir Wellington contemporary is the absurdity of unemployed men saving money out of busfcfoiling wages to stock a farm and house, besides paying a rental of £7 10s per annum to the Government, Between bad weather, cost of living, and the expense of tools, tho inexpert bush-whacker cannot earn mora-than enough'* to keep body and soul together!
