NOTES FROM BALLANCE.

(By Our Own Correspondent)

Since writing ray last wo havo experienced somo mild excitement, first in the shapo of a public meeting last Saturday, and next the School Committee Eleotion which took placo on the 24th inst,, at 7 p.m. in tho Schoolhouse. The moeting on Saturday was conyoned by Mr Bolton, tho Chairman

of the Pahiatua County Counoil, for v . tho purpose of explaining to the rato- ' Mangahao the benetits to do desired by having tho County divided into nine ridings, with ono member each, in place of tho existing systom. Tho anomaly at present isfirst that theridiogsare far too large, and this riding for instance is represented by two non-resident members. Mr Bolton is of course in favour of Bub-division, and so is. Councillor 6. Whitcomhe, who accompanied.;- Mr Bolton to Ballance. The curious part is that both our present members, Messrs Vile and Pinfold,.aro opposed to tho idoa of subdivision; ,Perhaps they fear sub-division would: affect their chances of re-election—or pcrha&Usth'e interest of the ratepayetßOTom they, aro said to not represent at present. . The meeting appeared to bo, in favour.of Mr Bolton's proposal, amj a potitjon, to be presented at the . next meeting of the County Council, in favour of dividing the Committee into, nine ridings, WB3 left in tbe hands,otMrHolstead'j the manager of the butter factory, for signatures, "■ 'f 'v-:-v

The Sohool Committee elections resulted in tbo return of the following gentlemen Messrs W.-Brown; Kip-, penbergcr, McLeod, W. Holskad, J. Sinclair, Jolly, and Anderson.' Tiie new Committee elected Mr Brown Chairman and Mr Holstead Secretary

for the ensuing year, A hearty vote /'of thiflgfems accorde d the' teacher, Mr J. Mcintosh, for. big ability and zeal in all matters affecting thu school generally, The same compliaietiwas paid the outgoing .Committee.: At the. general ■ nVeetibg.cofho.ußD-i holders & resolution .was', passed 1 that steps be taken .to raise funds for tho purpose of establishing a public library, and a Committee for the purpose of finding ways and means was appointed. This is a step in the light direction and-should : receive oyery encouragement, and I have. -.no doubt but that the Ballanco people will take the matter up in the proper spirit, It was also decided to estab-. lish a school library ou a small scale, bearing in mind tho trite proverb; " Great events, very oftimes from littlo O&UBCS BpriDg."

Jupiter Pluvius is showering bi.a favours down upon us again and some of the roads are now seas.of mud, in

fact my firm opinion with regard ,to

the fitness of things is,. that future v generations of the Hangahaoites will be born web-footed.

I think I told you in my Inst that the building trade .was: flourishing here just now, I will: hero. enumerate the various buildings in progress, or nearly finished, dwellinghouses for Messrs O'Neill, Miller, McLsod, lievell, Cowiejand Robinson. MrCroad,

with an eye to the future developsides' of ■ : a square and will contain hails for 30 or 40 cows at one besides affording splendid shelter to. those. left ■. in the almost enclosed yard. His effort is in the right direction and well worthy of imitation by. moro . of; our 4 settlers, who aro now already reaping a nice profit from the horned ruminv ants,
