MASTERTON.—SATURDAY
Frank Brantman (vas charged by tbe police with being drunk and in* capable while in charge of a horse.and also with riding on the footpath and resisting the polico on tha 10th inst. Accused, who was defended .by Mr. 0. A. Pownall, pleaded not guilty. Constable J. May give evidence that at about 2 p.m. on Wednesday last he saw defendant riding a horse in Queen street. Opposite the Prince of Wales' Hotel he rode on to the footpath. When brought beforo a Bench of Juatices the awed pleaded guilty, ■ MrPow.'ill objected, and said he intendod to prove that the inan made a mistake in pleading, and was not dronlt. Sergeant McArdle gave . evidence that he went with Constable May to the boarding home kept by Mr Olson to obtain the man's namo. By Mr Pownall: Remembered eouie poison coming to tbe Police Station for accused's horse. Had : told acsnsed he wassorry he had employed couniel, as if ho had pleaded guilty to the first charge ho would have asked the Court to, withdraw the charges. The man was a foroignerand did not

He crossed the footpath going to Hartley to get him to attend to., his horse. The constable came up attd took hold of him and they had a struggle* Witness got dear of the constable and ran off to Olson's boardinghouse. He waa not overtaken by tho police. Did not know the man chasing him was a constable, »nd be v?as perhaps more abusive than be otherwise would liavo boen, Ibesergeant camo to witness yeßter* day; "Ot B° lo Sergeant. concluded that the man was drunk when in obargo of a horse and fined him one pound with costs 7s.
