NOTES FROM BALLANCE.
(By Our Own Correspondent.)
The weather, which during the past season has played some uanccounlablo pranks, has during the last week given us no cause for complaint. The Easter holidays came on us with splendid Bunny days and cloudless Bkies, and the sporting fraternity who visited our district, bent on tbo desof feathered ytmo left fur amm with high impressions of our climate and district generally, 'The butter factory is still in full swing and turning out a fair quantity of butter per week. The manager (Mr Holstead) informs mn that the milk Bopply is gradually falling off in spite of tbo excellent quantity of grass to ho seen everywhere. TIIO abundance of green feed is no doubt partly due to the amount of rain we have had, which again would have a detoront effect in tho quality, making the grass "sloppy,"
Now buildings are the order of the day this year in Ballance, The temporary two-roomed slab erections making room for good substantially built dwellings with iron roofs, Mr J. O'Neill is having a nice cottage put up, and Mr A, Anderson is the builder, and Mr Cleghorn (formerly of Masterton) is just laying the foundation of a seven-roomed liouso for Mr Bevel I, in close proximity to the township.
We have just received the addition to our little community of Mr Robinson, blacksmith, late of Carterton, who is busy erecting a blacksmith's shop in the township, This will supply a long felt want, and prove a profitable venture for Mrliobinson, who,lam sorry to record, met with a slight accident the other day. In slipping off a log he sprained one of his ankles severely, and has only been able to get .about by the aid of cruiches since. HMSprstand the Woodville-Manga-MTsettlers have requested, or rather fare nogolialing, with Mr 11, Chester to have a creamery erected somewhere on tho Woodville-Mangahao Boad before next season, 800 cows being guaranteed. If this creamery is erected the cream will, no doubt, be taken to the Ballance Factory to be further manipulated into butter.
Mr W, Foster, of Ballance, boa this Week sold a 100 acre section on the Woodville-Mangahao Road, partly improved, to Mr Jackson, from Kumoroa, the price, 1 believe, being £BSO. Several of our settlers Lavej during the past fine days, endeavoured to born their bush, but through tho absence of tbo" favouring gale" the burning was only partly successful. This is much to bo deplored as a good burn means so much to tlio hatd« Working bush Bottler.
