Tenoi, April 4. Tjji annual meeting of the Senior' p oo( jall Club was held on Saturday ver mg at the Tenui Hotel. There ve ,3 twenty*five members present, J Mr E. E. Maunsell was in the Jttir. The following officers were elected:- Messrs A Hiler, President; A. Stuart, Vice'resident; M. Elder, Captain; A, Jameron, Deputy-Captain; J. Oweu ieoretary and Treasurer; and A, Speedy and W. Fortune, with the officers ex-officio as committee, It was decided to havo navy blue for the colours, the jerseys being ordered from the W.F.O.A. local store. Messrs Maunsell Bros hare kindly placed a , good paddock at the disposal of the . Olub- The first practice will be held on Saturday afternoon next, when it M is hoped every member will attend. The Masterton Clubs should arrange series of uiatohes with the Tenui Hub, as good games can be guaraneed. The Club has several prominent aotbnllore, who should use their best ndeavours to coach the new raem'ers, If physique has anything to do nth it they should give a good ccount of themselves against any earns. It is useless of our fellows hmking fhey oan get into form withtardus practice. Now the ball a set rolliugThope the members will iot allow the Club to fall through jwing to lukewamroess. Perhaps, as the season advances, a team will journey to Masterton and Pahiatua,

■ N, Owen's performance with the bat—l2 -in the recent mutch Masterton v, Wellington Stars, gave great satisfaction to hia sporting friends in Temii, We hope he will be as successful amongst the Masterton athletes as he was with us. We regret that he has left the district, as his services in the football field this Eeaßon wouldhavematerially strengthened us, However wo must always appreciate promotion in business matters, and congratulate him on being transferred to Masterton.

Mr Smith, of Whakataki, had a very narrow escape on Friday last. He was driving a bullock team from Aohanga to Mataikuna, and upon ' reaching Long Beaoh, the surf was rolling in so heavily that the leaders became unmanageable, and swerved suddenly round upon the polers, with ! the result that they all got fearfully ' entangled. Leaders, clamps and body ( bullocks, and polers, struggling vio« j lently together. Mr Smith liberated! thorn asl quickly as possible, butnoH before tl)q two polers and orie • >'ead|fli i were drowhed. With great f' vjffi of mind he chf his horsoJnnjggiKjri ' was tied behind the (rflKd it ' fortunately escaped witho Jnflury. k' His loss a- estimated betweejr fi'/fai Mm.- -'■ ■ k^ I The Tenni and Whakataki Kifle Club held a practice at the Tonui Butts on Saturday, when some fair shooting was shown. On the Queen's Birthday it is intended to fire for the Dißtriot Belt, valued at 14 guineas, presented by H. Elder Esq,, and a silver salver, valued at 10 guineas, J, 8. Handysido Esq., Akiteo. Each of the following has won the Belt onco;-J. Groves, A. Speedy, and A, Cameron. Besides the above mentioned trophies there will be sundry valuable prizes. There are some very fairshota in the Club,A,Cameron being particularly good, I notice that the Amateur Athletic Association has promised to re-instate several Amateurs after the lapse of six months, It is rather hard on youne, athletes who compete in local sports, for a paltry prizo of 80s or so, to bo debarred from taking part in any '< Amateur Meeting for a long time. It is not for the sake of a few shillings they run, but to give an impetus to local sports. A young fellow, living ' in the country, cannot possibly attend : an Amateur Meeting in a large centre without great expense, and cannot I eiuago his pace etc., unless he compote ' with others, but if he runs he is at ' once "struck off" as it were, Of I course it is necessary, I know, to "go by the rules," but in many cases they ; are too stringent.

Tenui has a County Council and Eoad Board, but no poundkeoper, Our poundkeoper "struok " some time ago. Cattle, horses and sleep wander about the roads at leisure to the inconvenience of pedestrians, nibbling hero a bit and there a bit, filling the tables vrith loose oarth, and doing a great deal of damage to the roads in general, Steps should be taken either to erect a pound, or offer facilities to some settler in tho district to do so, and a poundkeeper and ranger should be appointed. Bullock drivers get the credit of damaging the roads, but they are not so much to blame as tho cattle, etc. This district is purely pastoral. Mobs of cattle and flocks of , aheap aro constantly beingdriven from run to run and also to Masterton for transit to Wellington, It is, therefore, incumbent that every possible means be taken to keep the roads in thorough repair, During tho summer some forty thousand sheep and upwards of a thousand head of cattle have traversed the roads,

The Whaliataki school children hold their annual treat on Friday, tbeMth inab., at Whakataki. An invitation has been kindly given to the Tenui scholars. The Tenui climate in about the beat I have experienced. The summer has sjimply been a grand ono. When other districts were visited by heavy rains during the recent Soods this district escaped with slight rains. The

but, then, ifit rains herf uay a week it may rain elsewhere a fortnight. Last winter I counted sixteen successive fine dare, genenlly oloudlcss:
