The ordinary fortnightly meeting of | the Masterton Borough Council was held i last night, there being present His Wot- i ship the Mayor (Mr 0. A, Powuall) and i Councillors Heron.Mutrie.Yates, (Men, Hossey, and Feist. MINUTES. The minutes of the list meeting were read and confirmed; CORRESPONDENC2. Correspondence iuwardß was recoived from Mr W. H, Beethara offering to meet a committee on Thursday next to consider tbe question of obtaining a water Bupply from Landsdewne. From MrE. H. Wtddington on behalf of Mr J. J, Freeth, complaining that the culvert near his property wsb too small to carry off Btorm water and asking that Immediate attention be given to the matter.-The mßttor was referred to the Works Committee. An application from Mr H. Maidly to have his nßme inserted on the Burgess Roll was granted. GAS KEPOBT. Tbe report of the Gas Committee was read, His Worship said that as there were several recommendations it would be
necessary to consider them smaiim Cr Feist moved that the Manager's house be erected at a cost of not more than £250. Cr Heron said he thought that the Council would be unwise to spend the last shot in the locker for such a purpose, If they did, and wanted new plant, what were they to do ? He would move, as an amendment, that the matter be deferred until tbe Council was in a better financial condition. Cr Mutne seconded the amendment. He agreed with Cr Heron.
Or Hessey said he was in favour nf erecting a house, but thought it better to wait fur five or six months, '
The Mayor said he did not see any chanc3 of their being in a better poiibon in six months, If, howevor, thoy did not Eeo their way clear to build the house they ought to increase the manager's salaiy to mret the out'ay for rent. Or Cullen sad he did not think they could at tho present time afford to erect the bouse, He should like to see it done, but thought it would be inadvisable,
Gr Feist moved that the matter be left over unt'l next meeting to enable the other members of the Gas Committee to be present, The Mayor gave notice of an alternative motion, that in the event of the Council deciding noi to orect tho residence, the manager's salary be increased by the amount of his rent. The Mayor s?.id ho should li'ie to see the motion altered to read that the special rato be not collected oxcopt from those householders within a radius of a mile from the gas works who were not, consumers, The.object was to induce people to take gas. It wai possible to strike a preferential rate for water and he did not Bee why they cuuidnot deal with gas in the same way. Or Hessey pointed out that If that radius wai adopted they would have to lay several miles of gai mains, His Worsh-p agreed to alter hii motion to any radius the Council might agree upon.
_ It waa finally decided to leavo the consideration of the matter until next meeting. HUE JJBIOAD'j's COMIIfEE, The roport of the Fire Brigade's Committee was adopted as read, OHMtUKY. Gr Cullen asked what the Council was paying for coal. His reason for asking was that he understood the Grey Valley Company was charging 2s 6d lees per ton in Wellington. It was delivered at people's doors at 20s per tou.and the Council paid 22s Od per ton, Tho Mayor said he hsl brought the matter up at tho last meeting, and the Clerk had been instructed to itrito to the Grey Coal Company on the matter. The Clerk said he had written, and read a reply from tho Company, stating that no reduction could be made at present, and that a mistake had been made regarding the supply at 20a a ton The Mayor said that all he could say was that the Company's advertisement oould not be believed. Or Cullen moved that tenders be called for 100 ton lots of coal as required. Or Feißtseconded and vhe motion was carried. Or Feistmoved and Or Cullen seconded that Mr Bunny be offered £i for tho stable of the site for thn now Fire Brigade Station, Tho motion was carried.
