GREYTOWN—WEDNESDAY.

(Before Messrs H. H. Jackson and 0. W. Hornblow, J.P.'s). The adjourned case, Polioe v, Charles Petersen, on three separate informations, i.e., being drunk and disorderly, assaulting the constable while ia the execution of his duty, and using obscene language in a publio place, all on the Reoreation Reserve, on Friday last, 17th inst, oamo on yesterday. The case occupied the Court almost throughout the whole day, Messrs R. Ward Tate and B. Aohfl« son appeared (or defendant, and Oon» stable Ecoleton proaeouted. Mr late conducted during the prosecution, and Mr Aohesoa during the defence, The proseoutiob witnesses Were A, Allen, J, and G, Jackson, It, 0. Black, J, L. Bees, Dr Bey, Tuohey, A. Oashion, and H. E. Wood, tho defence Messrs E, B. Hawkins, H. Humphries, E. G, Collier, Beard, J. Braggins, Jno. Quinn, W, Wiggins, and J. Muguire. For the defence it was pleaded that tho acoused was of an exceptionally excitable nature, his father having having onco been oommittcd for lunaoy. That lunaoy is hereditary, and on the occasion of the offence the defendant was very excited, in fact, almost mad, and not responsible for ljia actions, When the case had olosed the Bench retired, and after having considered the evidence and the counsels' address, etc, decided as follows l For being drunk and disorderly a fine of £lO, or one months' imprisonment; for assaulting the .police .£2O, or three months' imprisonment. The charge of using obsoono'laiiufei?%iß dismissed, on the thg. actual words alleged to ti'ave heeti used, and set out in the information bad not been proved. The total fine was therefore £BO, ■ and costs £i 3s Bd.

, As the fine was not forthcoming, Petersen was taken lo the lockup, but within a few hours bis friendß si|b< scribed the required amount, and be was released,
