FIRE BRIGADES CONFERENCE

At the Fire Brigades .Conference a Committee has been appointed to take into consideration tho whole question of the maintenance of Brigades, It was resolved that the Executive have power to compel a Brigade to line or suspend any representative guilty of a conduct, while attending a conference, likely to bring his brigade into ridicule or disgrace. It was decided that the Association bo represented by a delegate at the English Fire Congress and also at the Firemen's Weok at Chicago, A Benevolent Fund is to be inaugurated. A committee has been appointed to report on the conduct of the Gisborne membere at tho recent Christchurch Banquet, Later, The lire Brigades' Association reassembled at 8 p.m. Ex-President Smith reodapaper on 1 Maintenance, Control and Management of Brigades, 1 in which he advocated maintenance by municipal bodies. Tho paper was ordered to bo printed and circulated among mombers of Parliament and fire brigades, The committee oppointed to report on the conduct of the Gisborne Fire Brigade found that tha offensive remarks made at tho banquet last year and attri. buted to the Gisborne Brigade were not made by them, but also found that members of the Gisborno team were associated with several members of other brigades in disorderly behaviour, The report waß adopted unanimously, The motion by tho deputy from Rangiora for payment by brigades of K capitation allowance to establish a {und to pay delegated' expenses at tho conference was loßt, The motion by Lieuteuant Shaw (Gore) for tho adoption of a patent spanner for testing joints in competitions was passed, Ex-President Smith was appointed the association's delegate at Chicago Exposition and London. Secretary Cummins (Wanganui) brought forward an invention by Harwood, of the Wangannißrigade, for timing competitions by electricity, and on behalf of the inventor offered to have models submitted to the executive freo of cost. The offer was accepted, It was resolved to register the association's seal under tbo Trade Marks Act. The action of tho members of the Wellington Brigade in casting improper reflections <pn tho probity of the secretary was severely commented on by nearly all the delewas appointed to waitSlwWellington Brigade for an explanation, Tho secretary's action was endorsed by the meeting. Ofting to tho difficulty the brigades experienced '.hrovgh non-regislration it was resolved that the executive ehould enquire into the matter of registering the association under the Friendly Societies Act and report at the next annual meeting, The debate on the maintenance of brigades is not expected to bo concluded before midnight, The dpbatp on the maintenance of fire brigades has just concluded, A recoinmendatiop has been made by (ho Committee to send a deputation to the Conference of municipal delegates fit Wellington to urge their claims and push forward a Bill in Parliament, It was aleo decided to admit police or members of salvage corps to the privileges of the Accident Assuranco Association, Notice of motion was given for to morrow that a committeo bo set up to watch the proceedings of the Bill in Parliament on Maintenance of Brigades.
